Removing steering column

On my 1955 F100 I could not find in the manual how to remove the steering column from the steering box. Did loosen the clamp at the base of the steering column to the box and the column at the dash connection and floor. However was only able to move the column up about 1/2". Did not want to pry on anything and cause any damage. So what is the prober way to seperate the two?

The column cover can be removed, but the steering box and shaft are a single unit.
