What do you all find to be the best 87 octane gas around here? I'm running BP but I get slight pinging undel load in OD, at around 1500RPM.

Where I used to live I used Chevron and never had a problem with any of my cars.

I figure gas quality is a regional thing, right?

89 octane fixes the problem but I'd like to save some $.

autozone sells octane boost that is cat safe it's much cheaper than hightest gas and your truck will love it.

 

Doesn't that octane boost stuff raise the octane only .1?

I'll gladly pay $3 (?) each tankful if it turns 87 into 93. (I suspect I can get by with 89 though.)

I read that too much octane can cause carbon buildup and make things worse, so I'm not sure what to do yet. I'm thinking colder plugs right now in that other thread.

 

I run Shell plus in mine.If you are worried about carbon build up Shell has a additive in their gas to help prevent it.Your truck is heavier than mine so the 89 will help it.

 

outlaw raises the octane about 5 or 6 #s. the higher the octane the better and more efficient the engine will run. most octane boosters also have an injector cleaning agent in them. the only bad thing is you MUST use the booster that is cat safe. you will probably pickup abou 2 or 3 mpg with this stuff also "if you drive like an adult"

 

talk about carbon build up get a cooler plug and then you'll have carbon buildup. those trucks are made to run on s&#$ty gas if its pinging that bad take it in while it's under warrenty

 

The ping is barely noticible and not very frequent. If I turn the radio up I can't hear it at all.



I'll check out that cat-safe octane boost. I don't have any cats, but I'd hate for a stray to get sick. (Just kidding!)

Do they sell bulk octane boost or only in one-use bottles?

What exact brand is the boost you use, or is it an AutoZone house brand?

The auto parts store closest to me is Advance Auto on Durant.

 

Take it in to the Dealer like Ashley said that way it falls under warranty and you have a record of it

 

"outlaw" makes a cat converter safe booster I think advance sales it. good luck . a spark knock is not a small problem if the engine is detonating it can cause damage.

well i know that the higher the octane the more carbon is build up in the engine. i found that out on research on a sho i redone when ford said only use 93 oct, in the cars and when i torn the motor down with less then 70,000 miles it was so carbon up it was not even funny, so doing some checking i found out the high test fuels carbon engines up fast then loe test, so i just set my timing to run low grade fuel, but with reg engines no high output motors the factory sets the timing to run on mid grade fuel 89 i think it is

 

our 05 explorer says to run 87 or no higher than 89. if you're getting carbon buildup with high octane then your engine isn't running hot enough.

 

john, were the 80's set to run 89 also? back then when it was like 80 cents a gallon you could afford 89 or 93 even ... i put 83 because i'm a poor public servant and county employee lol

You can but you should be abl to run Regular with no problems at least I would until all repairs are done. Once you have it all done it should run a lot better with a fresh tune up.
