Tranny problem E40D
#2
Okay let's see if I can remember his problem correctly, as I've never actually been near his truck, he just explained it to me for about 30 minutes, heh.
Anywho, my guess is that his TC is slipping. When he is coasting with his foot OFF of the accelerator, and then puts his foot back ON IT (around 35-50mph) it SLAMS, but then grabs the gear right away and keeps on trucking like no problem. He said that he didn't notice the RPMs surge up when this happened so I'm not so sure if it is slipping, but then again I don't know a whole lot about trannies. Also mentioned that sometimes it would happen around these same speeds when he was applying constant but VERY LIGHT pressure to the accelerator. This again makes me think TC slippage as the light acceleration is causing the truck to fall in and out of gear. Who knows?! Not me!
Fluid and filter were changed only a couple months ago, and the tranny was rebuilt around 50k miles ago (check my numbers here Justin). I know gustang is normally pretty edumacated when it comes to transmissions, where are ya buddy? Anybody have ideas here?

He used Mercon/Dextron III. Correct fluid. But mhg's advice is good Justin, drive the truck for a little while and recheck the ATF level; if low, fill it to the fill line and drive more, then recheck until the level stays constant on the dipstick. DO NOT OVERFILL!!!! I believe you can start blowing seals that way. Also be sure to pay attention to the color of the fluid and if you have any metal flakes in it.

I doubt that would be caused by a little less fluid.
And there should be 1 quart or less from the full line and the bottom of the dipstick.
12 quarts in all.
It sounds like something to do with a one way/sprag clutch or the coast clutch.
I'll look for my diagnostic wheel tomorrow and see.
Either way, it sounds like a mechanical fault, and if so, it needs to be opened up.
If some components in the trans that are linked to the engine are rotating slower as you take your foot off the gas, then when you step on the gas, those parts speed up real fast until they catch up with the rest of the trans that is still spinning at road speed and "BANG" the road speed parts stop them from going any faster.
And DO NOT DRIVE IT as each "BANG" could cause serious damage, like split the overdrive planetary and tear up the converter just like in the one I am rebuilding right now did, and the previous owner said it was slamming something like that.
