86 Bronco,351W,4bbl Holley carb.Idle speed problem.

I was having problems with the engine staying on choke and high-speed idle and and found it was due to no voltage at the choke. Disabled the choke until I had time to find out I needed a new choke relay. Now engine chokes and starts fine, high-speed idle is about 1800 rpm. After a few minutes of warmup, it drops, but only to 1000 to 1200 rpm. After about 25 minutes today of driving on the brakes, idle finally dropped to a normal 650 rpm, so it can't be that the curb idle screw adjustment is off.

I've cleaned everything, and throttle plates seem to function normally, no hanging up.

Any ideas out there?

LAST EDITED ON 21-Sep-00 AT 09:09 PM (EST)[p]Jonny, you have a fast idle screw on the choke assembly (toward the firewall). You can change your choke idle with this. Also, your choke linkage is probably sticking, causing extended fast idle. Try cleaning it with carb spray cleaner or something similar, and lubeing it with WD-40. Good luck. Don

P.S. Sorry, I forgot you cleaned everything. Nevertheless, could be sticking from a worn cam that works linkage. If that's it, you can smooth it out with a file.

Don,

You are the Bronco Wiz! Carb problem is gone, 1 more thing to go and I think I'll be done with it until next week.

Gasket or spacer under the carb gets charred and pieces ingested into the engine. Folks say it's normal with EGR - but when it leaks, it sounds like a blown exhaust manifold gasket, or worse, a hole in my brand-new stainless steel dual exhaust system.

Anything you know of to keep this from happening?

~ JON
