Smile Too much transmission fluid?

If I over fill my transmission with fluid, which I did, will something bad happen?

Thanks

Nah...manufacturer's only put the capacity on there as a guide. Heck...put as much as you want. The more you have the less you'll need to change it down the road.

Seriously...you can blow the seal which are quite expensive to replace. Drain out the excess.

it will also slip depending on how much you overfilled it by.

Unhappy

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll have to get all nasty again. Everytime I work on my cars/trucks, I have to do things twice. Dang it!

Are you sure it's overfilled. I have yet to be able to get a correct reading off of a drained & re-filled Tranny . I've completely disassembled & re-built 2 , added the exact amount via bottle count & the dipstick shows way over full . This is on 2 tranny reblds. The fluid is so light it covers the dip stick way up . I rely on the bottle count & after many miles accept what the stick says . On a drain I ck the fluid level before the drain, catch all of the fluid if correct level ,measure this amount & replenish with same volume .
A real pain , but the clean fluid messes up the dipstick . I would appreciate anyone elses help on this & their solution to remove the doubt . Sorry about stealing your posting p.s The 3rd time works like a charm !

I'm interested to hear what others are reading on their trans dipsticks. I just changed my fluid and filter at home (no powerflush) and after I put in 12 quarts, I checked the level and the dipstick showed way overfull. So I drained out about 2 quarts and now the dipstick reads just above the cross hatch marks. It bothers me that I was only able to put in about 10 quarts when I thought that just draining the trans would remove more.

Frankly, I find it hard just to read the dang dipstick. The fluid is so light that I'm not sure if fluid is being dragged up into the tube "over writes" the actual level. I check my fluid level with the engine in park at normal operating temp.

I agree.. It is very hard to read the dipstick. I too, did the R/R filter and drain the fluid. I put back in about 9.5 qts of tranny fluid..Now it shows just a hairr over the hatch marks when warmed up and put thru the gears..

Well ok then, that was my exact experience. I remember someone here on the boards say that all but 1 quart drained out. Guess that's not true. Sounds like changing yourself really only changes about two thirds of the total fluid. I wonder if only changing 10 out of 15 quarts is a healthy thing...

I recently did this.

It works well to get all the fluid changed.
