shifter problem

1988 F-150, 4.9, 5 speed. my shifter has all kinds of play in it, up and down, sside to side I cannot find the gears without playing around. dioes any one have a blow up pic of the shifter andle and assembly that goes into the trans?

Depends on the tranny.I believe(I may be wrong) that Ford ran both the M50 5 speed as well as another one, can't remember which one.Sounds like you'd need synchronizers...I'd go for an entire rebuild though to get it all out the way.Including a new clutch.

this all haPPENED WHEN I REPLACED THE CLUTCH, A FREIND TOOK YTHE SHIFTER OUT , WHEN I PUT IT BACK TOGETHEER THIS GHAPPENEED , THE BALL SWIVEL SEEMS WORN OR THERE MIGHT BE A PART MISSING

Hmmm, sounds like something didn't seat itself quite right.Although, I've noticed alot of the older fords that have manuals have ALOT of play within the channel for the gears as well as in neutral.

It's probably an M5OD. There's a pinch bolt that holds the shifter on, probably not tight enough. Take the boot up and you'll see it. 17mm I believe.

i was thinking the plastic bushing under the shifter cap at the top of the tranny may be the culprit.
