Could a 4x2 ZF S5-47 be converted to 4x4

My question is the following: Is it possible to convert a 4x2 ZF S5-47 transmission to 4x4 changing only the extension housing ??

No. You need to change the tailshaft housing and the output shaft. Because the ZF S5-47 uses an aluminum case that expands at a different rate than the iron internals, there are tapered roller bearings that need to have their preload adjusted. If you're doing that to the 4X2 you might as well rebuild the trans. At this point you probably have as much into converting the 4X2 trans to 4X4 as it would cost to buy a rebuilt 4X4.
