Here's a local's take on it. I haven't been in years.
Lot of drinking. All night cooking and partying. Lots of people. There are literally thousands of people down on the riverside all night long! Great food if you can get some of the cookers to give you some. I've heard a friend of mine say when his girls where little he could carry them on his shoulders and get all the barbeque he wanted! The consessions are high! Parking is a nightmare. You have to park on streetsides sometimes 5 blocks away. I think there is more garage parking in the area these days, but look to pay $10 - $15 to park and with little better security that streetside. This is downtown Memphis - much better police protection than in years past, but still very innercity. One thing that has changed dramatically is there is a lot of new developement in the area and a lot of well-to-dos have moved downtown, so much of the crime problem is not there anymore. There is a charge to get in, but I don't remember what it is. And the weather in Memphis in May can give you anything. Did I mention a lot of drinking?
It was fun when I went, but a lot about me has changed over the years!
