Anyone out there have a driver side knuckle they want to get rid of cheap? I was hoping that I just popped the joints during the last race, but it looks like I bent one of the ears on knuckle. I'd rather replace than try to fix and all of the local slavage yards around me that actually have an axle of these years, want to sell the whole thing and not just the knuckles. Go figure. My back-up axle is from a 72, so it's a king pin axle with the smaller 260 joints that I really don't want to go back to if I can get away with it. I need to just get rid of it and find another 77 D44, or pull the inner knuckles off and get a set of ball joint outters and be done with it.

Also, update!!!! If I can get the truck ready, I am seriously looking into running the Memorial Day run down at Mountainview, so same place as June 16th, just a few weeks earlier.

No leads on just knuckles. . .next time head to the local pick n pull I will keep an eye out. They have a 78-79 bronco in there every few visits.

 

I think I found a set on eBay. Should know tonight if I won them. The auction is for both sides, so we'll see.....

 

I think the only set you can use is a 1/2 ton ford dana 44, due to spindle and brakes. . .I tried searching earlier and only found dodge and GM. . .

Looks like they came from either a F-250 or supercab F-150, either way, same knuckle. Except for the bonus of now I can machine the passenger side and raise my steering linkage up a little out of the mud!

But. . .The only worth while, read: "Safe", knuckles to tap and run a high steer/cross over steering arm are the F250 knuckles. . .which means you can only run the 3/4 ton brake parts (dual piston calipers, 8 lug hub). And are you sure you wouldn't run into interference issues with your coils and the drag link?

There are special flat top f150 knuckles used on the super cabs, but they have a much thinner casting, and smaller flat top area which wouldn't let you run an off the shelf arm safely. The last stud and rear 1/3 of the arm would be hanging off in space!

He took some pics of the knuckle tops individually, and they look fairly thick. I know that I can put the 3/4 ton stuff on my 1/2 ton knuckles, and to do that in reverse is just a bit of machining to make the brake parts clear, so either way I'll get them and if they don't work, I'll stick them back on the evilbay and find another knuckle.

Which ones do they look like to you? For $70 to my door, do they look like a good deal for what I use them for and want to do with them?

 

They look like F250 knuckles to me

I dunno how much you will need to remove to get 1/2 ton calipers to work, when you look at your existing knuckles, I bet its a pretty big chunk.

BUT! Since this a mud pit running truck and not a daily driver, I won't yell at you like a little kid When you only drive a couple hundred yards per trip, I guess you can get away with a lot

If you want, I can get a couple pics for you to see my axle and cross over arms if you need it.

Lastly, if crossover doesn't work, there are other ways to get a higher drag link

 

The crossover steer is not a big requirement, I was just thinking that if I have the parts, might as well do it. The bad part is that if I don't, I wil have to drill out the knuckles anyway to make my heim joint steering links fit. We'll see in the next few days if everything will fit as they are on their way!!

Just an FYI, there is a late 70's F150 4x4 up at Pick-n-Pull with the axle still in it as of last weekend. I'm going to try and make a trip up there to pull the transfercase, and maybe a few other part but if you need the 1/2 ton knuckles let me know ASAP and if it's still up there and I will try and pull them for you, or just the one that was broke. . .

 

How much do you think they want for the knuckles? Or for the whole thing for that matter? Nick is wanting to do the SAS on his Bronco, and that would be a good addition.

 

I honestly don't know off the top of my head. . .probably around $40. I beleive it is one of there odd priced items. . .

For the whole axle though, is like $180. I bought a TTB dana 44 a few years back and thats all it cost, and the guys seem to be cool enough to let you get away with what ever is bolted to it, ie. radius arms, springs, track bar, sway bar (maybe), etc. . .to an extent, I'm sure. . .

 

Axle is still up there, though people are already going at it, passenger side hub and rotor are gone. . .the transfercase is the old 1 speed so I'm not going to go back up there unless you need something . . .
