2001 F250 Dana 50 or 60?

I looked for a while for this answer so i did try before i asked a repeat question so sorry if its been covered.

I know that Ford changed from the Dana 50 to the Dana 60 in mid 2001 F250s. Exactlly when on the production date and how can I tell which one I have? Same front and back on the 4x4?

The rear and the front are not the same, the rear is a Visteon, or "Sterling", and the ring gear measures 10.25" diameter. It is a full floater and is a stout unit. Now you must look for the axle ID to verify the front axle. At the top of the screen you can decode it under the articles and specs section.
Good luck, hope it is a 60 up front.

Nope, the rear axle is a Sterling 10.50. They ditched the 10.25 when they changed body styles in '99.

The front axle is most likely a D50. To my understanding, the F250's got the D50, while the F350's got the D60 up front. In 2005, when they went to the coil-over suspension, both the F250 and F350's use D60's.

Also, the Duallies used the D80 rear axle instead of the Sterling 10.50...

Still not sure

I found these numbers but the charts above just tell me its a 4.10, can't find something to prove D50 or D60 other than it should be?

Diff Tag: 4.10 1C34 KA
6110712

On front of front axle housing: 47721

On back of front axle housing: 228 003

On diff cover: 47707-1
266-00
REV-N
012599

Is it true that the D50 and D60 are EXACTLLY the same from hub to hub, ball joints, rotors the works. From the outside.

The only difference is that the D50 has a D44 carrier, ring & pinion and the axles tapper down inside the housing to match the D44 sizies.

If so, is it an easy bolt-out 2001 D50 front, bolt-in 2003 D60 whole housing conversion?

Can I use D44 carrier parts?

Why would Ford do that anyway?!!

The carrier and ring gear is a similar size to the 44. It is not using 44 components. The axles taper down to a size similar to the 44 as well, but other than size similarities, it is not a 44.

OK I don't have a sure answer to my questions and I am getting ready to need to know. After 220,000 miles of hard use I am finally needing to speed some money on my front hubs, axle, etc. But before I spent a dollar on a DANA 50 I need to consider going to the DANA 60.

1) Do I have a DANA 50? The number codes I posted above don't tell me and the other answer is that it most likely is but I have heard differnt answers for my 2001
F250.

2) Is it true the ONLY difference is internal and not external between the newer SD DANA 50 and 60? I have looked at them a little and see no big differences so is it a simple unbolt my DANA 50 and get a DANA 60 from a newer SD and bolt it in my truck? Is there a difference in the F250 or F350, I am told no?

3) I have differnt sources giving different answers on years. 2001 F250 MIGHT have a 60, no 2002 got the 60's, no 2005 got the 60's, they were only in the F350 after 2002????? I want to call a junk yard and ask them to sell me a hub to hub axle off a 2003 F250 that was not involved in a wreck and know I am getting a DANA 60.

4) Is the yoke to the front drive shaft different and will I need to change that?

I need to repair my left front hub and am getting ready to add a locker to the front so I want to consider the upgrade before I do. Thanks for any help ahead of time.
