I think a moon roof is glass and usually tinted and the sunroof is body colored and lets all the sun in.

The sunroof is for use during the daytime, and the moonroof is for use at night. Best of both worlds.

A sunroof opens up and out and sits like above the roof. A moonroof slides into the headliner and you can't see it when looking at the roofline.

My SHO's moonroof can be tilted upward and also slides into the headliner.

A sunroof is almost always metal, but it can be made of canvas (remember the sunroofs in early 60s VW Beetles?). It always slides open, either into the roof or over top like the canvas ones. The moonroof was invented by Ford, and first offered in the 1973 Thunderbird and Continental Mark IV. It's a glass sunroof, with a sliding solid panel on the inside that allows you to see out without actually opening the glass panel. For looking at the moon on chilly nights, hence the name "moonroof." So, all moonroofs are really sunroofs, but sunroofs are not moonroofs. If it just pops up at the back, then it's a roof vent. This first appeared on a production car on the 1972 Olds Cutlass, and was called a VistaVent.
