A real mans truck

You wont see me in any leather clad chromed truck, so Ford here is what I want. No disrespect to those who like that, but its not my truck.

1. Real bumpers, not that flimsy plastic crap. Put hooks on em, and the ability to bump a tree or post or Toyota and not crumple.

2. Reduce the unneeded weight. Contradicts 1, but worth it. Make cabin heaters an option for the Knuks and Eskimos, I know it can get mighty cold in Labador. Make a 1/2 ton smaller not bigger. When gas hits $4-5 / gal this will make sense.

3. No vibrating heated cooled namby pamby seats, mirrors or other crap, plus see 2 above.

4. Everything that has fluid should have a drain and fill hole.

5. Brakes, ehh you got that right, nice job with your brakes.

6. Seats again, either bucket or bench no in between, 60/40 stinks.

7. Steering wheel, oh yea put the darn spokes at the 4 and 8 o-clock position, sheeh you had it right in the 80's den ya screwed it up.

8. A grommet to route your CB wire out the cab to the bed.

9. Enough power to get you there and back. If I want to tow a house I'll get a F2,3,450. I want reliable with plugs I can change. That is why I didn't get a Triton in the first place. 25 MPG Highway would be nice.

10. Selectable locker in the rear.

11. Wheew this is fun, I may just go to Fords web site and see how close I can get to this truck.

What you listed would meet your requirements is a Ford truck, all right....a 1979 truck! Which is what I have. As far as I'm concerned, that was the last year for real trucks.

I dunno, the 80-86 are tough trucks. The only thing I could complain about is the cheap dash.

Here's a real nice one. Ebay has quite a few that are listed.

No offense, but its always interesting to see people say things like that. Trucks have gotten better over the years, and there have always been things that go wrong with them (no designs anything perfect). I have both old and new trucks, and its always interesting that those who only like the old usually have never own the new, at least not in any recent decade. Old trucks are great for many things but so are new trucks. I'd never take a cross-country road trip in my 75 or 67.

My newest vehicle is a 2002, and I hate it. It is the complete opposite of what cars I'm so used to.

I really don't see any major changes for the better in quite a while. Comfort and convenience, yes, big changes there. But then I don't/never used them. On my '02, the only useful thing I'd like to have in my '79 is the built-in compass and outside thermometer. The rest are just there for prettying up the dash.

I wouldn't hesitate to take my '79 anywhere. Besides, if I happen to get stuck in my '79, I'm sure I can fix it on the side of the road compared to flagging down a good samaritan.

I will agree on him about the plastic clad bumpers and valances, but if they didnt put them on there then all the people who buy trucks and dont use them like we do wont get good gas mileage and will get around 10mpg like i do in my 77f150 4x4. Someone needs to come up with a company that can produce real functional bumpers, axles, seats and drivelines for people who really use their trucks and want one setup like an old truck. But then someone like me who has an old truck wouldnt mind having a new one like they are for those long highway runs and when it gets blistering hot outside and enjoy the air. Until somthing changes, I will end up having one old truck and one new one.

Alot of people now a days are buying f150s for such light duty use. Alot of guys even buy them to use as "cars" if you know what I mean. Now a days if you want a truck for working, your better off to get a 250 or larger.
As much as I do like, and enjoy the older trucks, there is a reason they dont make them like that anymore.

Hey Webmaster just because most of us don't have $25,000+ to spend on new truck you should know I drive new (company) Ford F150 's all time and at end of day am glad to get off the rock hard seats and into the Old 94 F150 . You couldn't give me a 2006 down to 99 F150 but We will see with new 2008 ones. , I do like the F250 350 450 I a take 2004 F450 4x4 with buckets over every chance I get and leave the my new 2006 F150 4x4 sit . I put 500-600 miles a week on it . I had a new truck every 2 years till 99 and will not get another till they change.

Put me in the camp that wants a real truck.

I don't need or want leather seats and carpeting. However, I understand that not everybody wants the exact same thing.

So here's a concept... build trucks like they did in the '70's. What I mean is let me choose what options I do or don't want without having to get a bunch of other stuff just because you have to order a package.

If Jermafenser only wants a compass and thermometer, then why does he need to order an XLT?

Jermafenser and Dirty make a good point. On the 70s pickups guys are updating their pickups with creature comforts that were not too common when the pickups where new.

I guess if I am going across county I will usually take out Mercury Sable. Good mileage, good ride, lousy for hauling anything of size.

To a point I can see taking a newer vehicle. However if I restore something to nearly new or driver status I would not think twice about taking it for a road trip. None of this trailer queen stuff either.

F150 XLT Supercab. Brother in law & me bought it new. We use it frequently to move our dirt bikes. He uses it as much as I do. I used it less once I got my own pickup, the '79 in the last month. When I'd drive it, it feels like I'm driving a luxury car more than a truck. I often had to watch where I'm parking, I can't see the hood (this is true on almost all newer vehicles...) it's a minor annoyance. Maybe I'm imagining it, but there were always mysterious sounds whenever I'd drive/ride in the 02. And the '79 has more room inside the cab than the '02 does. I always hit something when I'm exiting the '02. And no, I'm not large. The amount of plastics in the '02 always gave me static whenever I touch something as well.

When I went to look at the trucks then, I was surprised at how limited at what you can get. You can choose either gray or tan interior. Whatever happened to blue, red, white, and green? And whatever sounds good, it had to come with a bunch of other options that wouldn't get used. So we just got the run-of-mill XLT.

Don't get me started at how cramped the engine bay is...

Good responses!

Yeah, you can see from my signature, that I have an old truck and a new truck, technically the B2 is a SUV, but I use it like a truck. Any hoo, it has a metal dash, is tough as a rail spike, a nice steering wheel, glove box light, real ash tray and nice seats. It gets 21 mpg on the highway with the locker and big tires and 2" lift, and has 200K miles on the clock. And the B2 is still my favorite over my 2003 F150 XLT.

I too would have bought a 1995 or earlier F150, I like that look better, but I wasn't looking at the time and I like to buy my vehicles new. I did pick the 2003 over the current model due to all my comments above, except I have a crappy steering wheel in the 2003. My next purchase will be around 2010 or 11, so I'll have to see if the new F150 has what it takes.

I will agree with webmaster on the long road trip. I will take the B2 anywhere if I' am alone, but not if the kids are with me, cause 20 years is pushing it for anything mechanical.

Our gas hit 2.99 here in Indianapolis today. Thanks for all the replys and comments. Does anyone know what MP3 is?
