Speaking of honest mechanics. I live in Charleston and have a 1996 PSD with 205,000 miles. My torque converter was making a rattling noise at idle. Some shops said it was not the torque converter while others said it was normal. I took the truck to General Automotive Diesel on Dorchester Rd. When I pulled up the owner Tommy walked out and said, “You have a bad torque converter”.
He later called me to tell me he pulled the converter and strained a coffee cup of metal from the old TQ. Instead of telling me I needed a new tranny he dropped the pan, pulled the valve body, flushed the tranny, cooler lines and cooler. Told me to run it and if it started to slip I would need to replace the tranny. So far so good. This guy was honest, told me up front what it would cost and that he only used Ford parts because of the upgrades they have made to the TQ. He had it ready when he said he would and only charged me an additional $100.00 to drop the valve body, flush with a flushing product and the filter.
Great guy with a lot of common sense and knowledge.
