what kind of mileage should I be getting? and other Q's
Just curious after reading some other posts about mileage, but thought I would ask. I drive a 93 bronco with a 4 in pro-comp lift, 351, e40d, 3.55, and 35's. I dont always calculate my milage, but I get about 8-9 in town and maybe say 10-11 hi-way. Oh yeah, I have 105k on the engine.
One other thing, I the code for TPS voltage being too low came up recently, but the truck doesn't really drive different. The only ocasional weird thing it does is if I am cruising on the hi-way, the rpm's will jump up about 400-500, say every 2 seconds or so. Sometimes it doesn't do this at all, and sometimes it seems like it wont stop. This only happens on the hi-way. This startede before the TPS code came up, but it was still very low, like .6volts.
Any ideas?
Thanks Dave

Dave,
With a 351 and the big tires, you are probably getting OK mileage. You might get better by putting in a K&N filter, 3" exhaust and upgrading the coil.
I get about 15 on the road with 11-12 around town. I have an 86 302EFI with AOD.

I am currently driving a '94 Bronco with the stock 31X10.50's and it also has the 351 engine. Until a couple of months ago, I was getting 13-15mpg all around. Then, the pressure circuit in the computer blew, and I had to replace the entire computer. Well, Ford only offers an udated version of the original. After changing the computer, I get a whopping 18-19mpg around town (unless I push it a lot), and about the same on the highway. I know it sounds strange, and I cannot believe it myself. I also used to have a '89 F-150 with 35's and a 6" lift as well as a 302, and I was getting 12-14 mpg with that.

That computer runs about $250.00 for the part, but I also had to pay for the diagnostics and troubleshooting to determine that part was bad in the first place. Now don't get me wrong, if I really run it hard, I can bring it down to around 12-13 mpg, but I don't usually drive that hard all the time.

I have the same truck, the modification that made the most difference was the speedometer calibration and headers. Have you adjusted your speedometer to see what your really getting. I get about 13-15 mpg with the headers, 35's and 4.56 gears

If I can make it work, this is an MSExcel spreadsheet of last year's costs for my '96 Eddie Bauer with a 351W engine. I do a significant amount travel between Tallahassee, FL and Sylva, NC where I have a cabin.

what kind of mileage should I be getting? and other Q's
How does the suspension hold up to the 35's? I have a 93 bronco with a Pro Comp 6" and 35" tires and they rub like hell. Its really embarrassing. I'm curious if i have something wrong or a worn out set of springs. the lift is about 11 months old and i have put about 10,000 miles on it.

What are your tires rubbing on? Generally, the problem is the radius arms. When you turn to full lock of the steering wheel, your tires will rub on the radius arms. When I installed 35x12.50's on my F-150 with a 6" suspension lift, I also got a new set of 15x10 rims. These provided enough backspacing to move the tire out from the axle, and I could turn the truck from lock to lock without rubbing. If you are rubbing the body, there is a problem with your suspension. With a 6" lift, there is plenty of room for 35's.

I have a 90 XLT with a 351, 99k. Now, you can believe this or not, but I just experienced a 3mpg gain by switching from 87 octane gas to 91. I wouldn't have believed it myself if I had not seen it. But I was getting 10-11 mpg, and now I just got 14 on the last tank. And today I just fixed my thermostat so it runs at the right temperature, which should hopefully increase the mileage a little more.
