Big block trany

Hi, I am implanting a 429(514) in my '71 Ranchero. My question is will a 1-1/16th in. input shaft toploader from a 428 mustang fit with a newer('85+) clutch on this engine? I have been told I will need a 1/2" spacer to hold the Bell housing back to accomidate the clutch. Is this true? I know the clutch and tranny will work but will I need the 1/2" spacer? Cheers

yes you will need the spacer, the pressure plate hits the bellhousing and locks everything up. [dont ask me how i know this!]
