oil filter

I just got this new to me 92 f150 5.4 and was wondering where the oil filter is? It has been pissing down rain so I haven't been able to crawl right under the truck. Also the oil filler cap say 5-20w oil. I have never heard of 5-20 weight oil. 5-30 yes but not 5-20. Is this a Ford special oil ?

It's going to be in one of three places... up under the left front fender, near the tire (as duggyb mentions), up on the drivers side of the block front underneath, or up at the very front of the engine.. on the drivers side... from underneath.

As far as oil, almost all 2001+ fords recommend 5W20, but you can use 5w30 as long as the temperature does not drop below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Good luck.

my 2000 5.4 has the oil filter drivers side on the block, and 5/20 is common oil, just not as common as 5-30, it all has to do with how cold it gets where you are, 5-30 is pretty good all around oil, unless it gets really really really cold

I use 5w20 all year around. It is what Ford recommends and it works fine for me, even towing over 7000# in 98 degree weather with the a/c on.
The filter should be mounted above the front axle. I am assuming that you have an 02 and not a 92. It is pretty easy to get to and the front axle even has a plastic funnel guide to keep oil from running all over everything when you remove the filter.

that oil guide is a life saver, i work in a shop and there are cars with out that, the oil gets all over the axle and i have to spray everything down with brake parts cleaner, what a pain, just another point that makes ford great

Oil Filter

It quit raining so I slid under the truck and found the filter, on the block as you said. I didn't realise that there was a "funnel" on the pumpkin, This should keep the mess to a minimum. I used to have a 92 but it just plain wore out so that's why I got the 02. As for this forum I will be back again to sort out problems I encounter as I did with the old truck. It has been invaluable tome as wellas so many others I suspect.

Cheers, Stevieray
