Any trick to replacing push rod cover gasket?

The push rod cover on my 79 F150 is leaking pretty good and it looks fairly easy to replace the gasket. Just label and pull the plug wires, remove the coil and remove the pushrod cover bolts.

Am I under estimating the task? Does anybody have any gasket installation advice to help me avoid having to do the job twice?

Thanks

-Tony

Don't overtighten...something like 10-12 ft lbs....firmly snug.

On my '94 F150, the torque is 18 to 27 INCH pounds (Haynes 1980-1996, so a '79 could be different). 12 inch-pounds = 1 foot-pound.

Be sure to get the new little bolt grommets centered in their holes before you tighten it all down. If one of the grommets doesn't seat squarely oil will seep past it.

Thanks for the responses. I have an old Haynes so I'll check there for the correct bolt torque. Does anyone have an opinion regarding whether to use a sealer on the gasket? If so what sealer and should I use it on both sides or just on the cover side?

sealer on the square gasket is your preference. I typically just make sure everything is perfectly clean and just put a couple dabs of glue on the cover side to hold the gasket in place as you install.

As for the grommets, i have never gotten them to seal using a sealant. They've always leaked on me unless it was rubber straight to steel.
