1960 Starter Info Needed???

Apparently I need a new starter. To get mine fixed it will cost $140.00. Is there anyplace to get a new/rebuilt one cheaper?
I have a 1960-223 6 cylinder.

Look on e-Bay for a replacement, as that's about the average cost to get one remanufactured.

I have "rebuilt" a number of starters and generators over the years. If yours is not totally toasted (like a burned out armature or a short in the field windings) you can probably fix it yourself. Usually, a good cleaning of the inside, a new set of brushes and end bushings are all you need. Those parts can be had for a fraction of what you will pay for a rebuilt starter. If that doesn't work you can still buy a rebuilt and not have lost much but your time.

The 223 starter is the same from 1956 thru 1964. Shop around, prices vary from one auto parts store to another. Rebuilt 223 starters are usually priced at around $50.00 (There are prolly more 223 starters around than vehicles to put them in). The brushes and bushing/bearing are also the same, and are available from most auto parts stores.

18-11057 .. Brush Set (Motorcraft SB-2)

C4TZ-11052-A .. Brush End Plate Bushing (Motorcraft MC-170)

B9AF-11135-A .. Drive End Bearing (Motorcraft MC-9)

Do the newer 61-64 have the same drive? As you probably know, mine has that real odd drive that engages the flywheel from the tranny side.
Thanks

I struggled with finding the correct starter drive while rebuilding my starter for my 1960 223. Every one the local parts guys would come up with would end up being too long once engaged and end up jamming against the flywheel and actually locking the motor up. Read some threads with rumors of an FE starter being able too work on this engine. Took a shot and ordered a starter for a 1961 T-Bird with a 390 (FE) engine. Well let me tell you, it bolted up and worked perfectly. I like it way better than the original one which pulls in and engages from the trans side. Has a lot more torque also.
