Coil on plug

Hello all,

I've done some searching without much luck on this topic specifically. I did my spark plugs at 79,000 and got half way through and got fed up, had my truck towed to the shop to finish it. I don't want to do this again.

It's time for new plugs again and the problem I ran into last time was not getting the plugs out or back in, but guiding the spring from the coil plug boot back onto the tip of the spark plug. Is there some trick to this? Should I use a really long socket, put the spring on before the boot, tighten it down, and then slip the boot over the spring???

No matter how hard I tried last time, I could not get the boot to seat itself on the tip of the spark plug. I'm hoping someone can provide me some insight on how to do this easier. I got all 8 out last time, and reassembly was a nightmare. To top if all off, the shop took all the plugs out again "just to make sure" that I did everything right (total BS) and charged me as if I had done nothing myself.

Open to any suggestions.

Thanks.....

I changed my plugs a month or two ago. When reinstalling the COPs, for each, all I did was push the boot down into the hole and while holding the top of the COP, reinstall the little bolt. I took one back apart just to make sure everything was seating properly and it was. Several thousand miles later, I haven't experienced any problems.

So to answer your question, I don't know of any tricks other than to install the opposite of removal.

I did mine recently. If you are expecting a "snap" as the spring seats on the plug, there is none. You just push it in all the way straight and it's on!

Just throwing this out there, and dont flame me for it. BUT, I have 120,xxx and counting on my 2000 expe. with the 5.4l. I have NEVER replaced the plugs, and I have replaced only one COP. I still get 18mpg highway and 13 in town.

The point I am trying to make is, dont waste your time changing plugs. Just my .02
