Oxygen Sensor, PIP / Stator on Distributor

351 with E04D. Just gave her a tune-up...and I thought this recent re-occuring problem would have dissapeared.

Here it is...She doesn't start on a cold morning. I have fuel pressure, plenty of spark, etc. Now if I go to open the hood, it stinks of gasoline, so my first indication is that she has flooded. She starts up eventually after maybe 20-30 cranks, and I have the feeling that anymore of this practice will end up in a much needed starter replacement, which i want to avoid.

She has 78k miles, all highway, no towing.

Im suspecting a bad O-2 sensor and possibly an erratic PIP/Stator. If I replace the O-2 Sensor right away, will she start up with no problem?

And if so, where are the O-2 sensor(s)?

Post Oxygen Sensor, PIP / Stator on Distributor

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Jan-02 AT 07:53 PM (EST)]Hi Tim, WEll changng the oxygen sensor may help but, i have a 1989 bronco and had the same problem starting it and also peventing it from stalling. After 3 weeks of it being in th garage they changed the o2 sensor first. that didn't solve my problem. after goin through the whole engine a computer they came back to the fuel regultor and that seem to fix my problem. I bought my truck with no engine and had a brand new engine put in and 3 months after went through this stalling problem. hope this gives you some new channels to look at.also chistmas eve truck was runing fine, and when i went to leave relatives house the truck would not turn over, and could smell lots of gas under hood. ended up being the distributor cap and modular.

I'm having a very similar problem. When you say distributor cap and modular do you mean rotor or something else??

Have you tried holding the pedal to the floor during cold cranking?

Ok now...i changed the distrib. cap, rotor, O2 sensor, and even the entire distrib. assembly (for a reason i will not get into). I turn the ignition key...NOTHING...the diagnostics computer last told me that the O2 sensor and Stator were on there way out...so i fixed them ...and now i get nothing...plenty of spark, plenty of fuel pressure...this is ridiculous.
timing is good too...

anyone out there want a 1994 351 with 78k miles?

i've lost faith in Ford - 3 sables, bronco & mercury monarch.

the only good ford i had - 70 Maverick with 3 speed column shift...

If you've got spark and fuel I'd look to air. My '90 recently did this and would not start til I held the pedal to the floor - I can only assume it was flooded and/or air bypass valve is shot.

i checked all associated fuses in power distrib box. all of them are good, visibly as well as what was indicated on the meter.

now im calling it quits for tonite...so i left the positive btry. lead off...will this allow any electronic device to "reset" and perhaps grant me any luck?

you said when you turn key theres nothin. do you mean you cant hear fuel pump in the tank come on for a sec. or two either ? on my '90 i hear my pump kick on just for a second . once when i turned the key over , i didnt hear the pump and it also wouldnt start. theres a fuel pump relay under your hood. replaced w/ one from ford. fixed it. ($12.00)

He said he's got plenty of fuel pressure so the fp relay would have to be ok.

Now that you have messed with the ignition, I would double check you still have spark. If you do and it still won't start, pull a sparkplug and see if it is wet with fuel. If it is, you must be flooded.

Plenty of spark into distributor and out to the spark plugs, good fuel pressure (can hear pump going and bled the Schraeder valve to make sure), air (obviously - even kept the throttle body flaps opened while cranking), starter turns engine over, timing is good, checked associated fuses (all good)...etc.

i just dont know what the hell is going on here

You seem to have exactly the same problem that I'm having. I have all three things two spark fuel and from what I can gather its getting air. It runs like a champ when you get it started. So far I've replaced:

starter (cause its burned up / gone out)
starter solonoid
ignition control module
ignition switch
coil
plugs wires cap and rotor
IAC
coolant temp sensor
fuel pressure regulator
oxygen sensor
fuel filter
everything associated w/ EGR valve and sensors
throttle position sensor

Could the mass air sensor itself be causing this problem?? I don't get any codes from diagnostic. Is there another sensor that could cause this. I think I've replaced almost every sensor on the truck.

LOL...
