Towing a 1992 Bronco
I read a post from Al O'lainer - that stated there were different points of view about towing Bronco's - would you please share the points of view -
I plan on flat towing my Bronco. front locking hubs BW 13 56 manual. I was told that I could flat tow with the transfer case in neutral.
Note the 1992 does not have air bags.
However, I too have been looking at how I will set up a tow bar on the front. My current plan is to fabricate a new bumper mounting plate where the stock one is - then cut the center section of my bumper down about half way (to the top of the frame rail about 4") I will only cut down the bumper between the frame rails.
I am then planning to use 3/8" plate steel and fabricate extensions on my frame rails - drill three holes per side to bolt on - the extensions will bolt on side of frame rail then curve up to miss the bottom half of the bumper and I will round off the ends and drill out a 3/4 to 1" hole in the end. Next I was going to run 1x2 or 3" by 1/4' tube between the two extended 3/8 parts in the front, welded. then weld 1/4" plate across in order to mount warn's new 15,000 winch.
My plan is to fabricate a tow bar to connect on the two 3/8" frame extensions - when not towing I will put the bolt through "u" hooks as pull points.
I felt that this would be "over kill" enough - The last thing I want is to loose the Bronco while towing it - the tow vehicle is a 30 foot motor home - rated to pull just over 6000lb.
does anyone thing I will have any issues ?
thanks

yo 92,
I can e mail you my downloaded 96 Bronco Owner's Guide (formerly titled an "Owner's Manual" w/towing info. Let me know if you want it.
However, a "hot mail" type of e-mail account won't be able to handle the file size; it is about 1.5 Megs and in PDF format.
It has some towing info and I now see that Ford does supply a "towing guide" to "authorized" towing firms that provides more towing info than shown in the Owner's Guide.

You didn't mention what kind of powertrain your motorhome has, but I'm assuming it's either Ford or Chevy with an automatic. If that is correct, please be sure it has an aftermarket tranny cooler(the factory one is not enough) installed. Also, your motorhome will have to do the braking for both vehicles, so be careful on long downhills. Good luck with your project

>92,
>I don't know what Ford tells towing firms in that booklet
>about towing from the front.
>I searched for on-line info to no avail.
>Be well,
Most Tow Trucks use Dollies.
In some parts of the world,it's legislated to do so, others for insurance reasons
