Like already mentioned; the Cobra had a N/A 4V 5.4 and the CURRENT Shelby uses a Blown 5.4 DOHC 4V.
And while it was only with us a short while; Ford's crown jewel GT used an aluminum block, dry sump DOHC 5.4 4V.
This subject is very frustrating to me because Ford HAS the goods in their parts bin to offer us the power crown.
what always made me wonder most was what could ford do... if they were to take a 5.4 and basically make a cammer out of it... bore it out to 6 liters, variable geometry intake like the FR500, and all the other good stuff...
or hell, another contender for the performance crown would be a v10 based on the 4.6 stroke. it's been done in a mustang before with pretty damn good results... dohc v10, 5.8L, made upwards of 400hp/420tq if i remember right... that would take no effort to do.
or hell, drop the v10 in the f150. exactly as it sits right now... would pretty much shut toyota up real quick

I really think (but don't know for sure) that the engine in the 5.4L is limited by the tranny that is used and not the technology for producing more/better power out of it.
If they had a stronger tranny with the correct "truck" ratios then I would imagine they'd have a stronger engine.
I really think the V10 would grenade the 4 speed or the Expy's 6-speed. But I'm no automagic tranny wiz.
I wish the 4R70W attached to my 4.6L had way way lower gears. First gear runs up to 42 mph Second to 70 mph??? That is ridiculous. First should run up to 30 max. Second to 50.

you'd be surprised what the 4R70W can handle.. the mustangs that have em (96+) push 500+tq on slicks through stock autos all the time. the 2004+ f150 4R75E based on it, is even beefier. they could handle a v10 just fine

i really do not want to sound like this but the V10 gets pretty bad gas mileage, my friend has it in his F250 and he gets at the best 9 or 10, but its just badass to say, ya it has a V10 in it
That 5.4L is the 4V. I guess it is similar to what used to be in the Navigator.
It needs more torque but I'd take a 348/368 4V V8, I guess. BTW, the specs said it makes 260kW which converts to 348HP...not 389. Where did that number come from or did I convert it worng?
www.fpv.com.au
290kW = approx 389hp (forthcoming version will be 325kW)
And the current is a rather "energetic" 389 ponies - if you catch my drift
As for using it in a "real" truck.... I would advise against it (unless the forthcoming 420hp version proves better).
The engine doesn't really make a whole lot of torque until 3500rpms - and then, thanks to its long stroke, the party is all over by 6grand.
Great for a car (or a light "sport truck" like mine) not so good for a heavy Crew Cab F150.
Thing makes 325lb-ft from 1500 rpms - all the way to redline (6500)
Max torque is about 410lb ft@2000-4500rpms (converting in head)
This is for the current 360hp version. The 420hp version should have MUCH more torque
As long as it tows and hauls what I ask it to, I don't care how fast it goes. I buy trucks to work, not race...I'll go build me a 351W or C Mustang if I feel the need to go fast!

Uninformed. Post that include "my friend, buddy's friend, a guy at work, some guy who told etc. etc." and use them as proof is pointless.

Gee...wonder why they didn't stick one behind it then. Bet they're cheaper for Ford than the 5R110.
Look lets get real, Ford needs to wake up!! Until they get a 6speed tranny which automatically makes it more fuel efficient and more horsepower, they're going to be eating dust!!

That's pretty funny...
IMO...sounds like "User error". Come visit the V10 forum sometime. Most reports are in the 14-15mpg highway...and city 12-13mpg. In an all OEM setup.
Gues we'll have to wait for them to build a whole new engine to get the HP/TQ "bragging rights". The way I see it is we can only legally drive 75mph in the US (in certain places). Our current 5.4L accomplishes that no problem even towing 10K. What's everybody's hurry??
I totally agree Monsta!
The hp/torque numbers for bragging rights should go away like the dinosaurs. In today's world...and increased oil costs and instability, FORD should be thinking of economy over hp/torque ratings. The current 5.4L 3v is a GREAT engine and suites the F150 perfectly. Does everything it was designed to do.
The 6.2L V8 "Hurricane" (or whatever they are calling it this week) will be the next generation V8 for FORD. It will have the high hp/torque figures, but with better fuel efficiency. The 6sp Auto tranny will certainly help with putting the power to the ground, but keep those mpg's up.
