79 bronco with 460

I bought this 79 bronco with a 460 in it. If you start it it will shutoff right away if you dont constantly give it a little gas for about 3 to 5 minutes when the temp rises and then you can keep it running without giving it gas. Is there not a way to get it to start up and idle fine right away. The engine only has 51k miles on it. I was told that the cam is very large and oversized or something. They are running a brake booster because the bronco supposidly needed it. I got the dual battery setup and a new alternator and starter. The carb is a holley 4bbl(not sure what size), with a dual or twim fuel line pumper or something. When i had a proflow triangular air filter on it the carb would sometimes shoot out a flame which burned throught the filter. When i put a circular filter on it i havent had any flame problems and recently after retiming it it has been fine although the timin marks go from 0 to 3|0 which i was guessing was 30 cause the marks stopped after that. I have it at 3|0 now and havent had a flame problem. Im not sure how to adjust the idles on the carb because im not fimilar with holley or 4 bbls. i replaced all the battery cables. Is the engine just so big that it needs to warm up or can i fix this.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Feb-02 AT 03:33 PM (EST)]Adjust the idle screws when the engine is warm or hot.
I suggest getting a vauum gauge to do this .
Turn One screw IN until the engine starts to sputter now, Turn the screw OUT (counting the turns) until the engine starts to sputter stop ,now go HALFWAY in between those settings.
ie: Turns 2 1/2 times before it starts to sputter >Turn the screw back IN 1 1/4 turns Chcek for Maximum Vacuum(18-21)

Now, Do the same for the other screw.

That's done.

Re-connect vacuum line.

The Choke linkage is probably binding.

You'll have to go over the whole choking system.
1)Proper clearance in the air horn /butterfly when engine is cold.
2)vacuum leaks around housing & fittings.
3)Binding Linkage to Turn choke on when touching the pedal.
4)Binding linkage when choke trying to go off.

Look for " Linkage Hang-Ups " Repair/adjust and lubricate with
spray lubricant.

Engine timing:

Locate the timing mark on the balancer and paint it
with " White Out" or " Liquid Paper"

Check timing
It shouldn't be at 30*BTC

Look at the engine sticker for timing info.
Degrees Btc
Vacuum line dis-connected and plugged
Correct RPM.

This is not the stock engine. Their is nothing on the engine that tells me what the timing should be however i was told that it should be 8 to 10. But i cant even get the engine to go to that mark becuase it will die or stall once it gets to about 20 down to 15. Their are 4 screws around the carb with no butterflys on top but 4 open chambers. Their are two screws where the choke linkage or gas pedal linkage is. Which screws do i turn. Is their a way to get the engine down to 8 without killing it or stalling it. Right now the engine revs at about 1.2 RPM and if you barely touch the pedal you go and i mean you go. If there is a way to fix this i would love to and also where do i hook up the vacum guage( is it to a hose).

Call holley and ask them to fax you some info - or go to the local library - you should find plenty of info - also do not forget to check some obvious items like ,,, are the plug wires connected to the right plug - again the library - you will find the firing order - you will see how to check the order etc. to have the timing that far advance is odd to me ...
FYI - what I believe Mil1ion is talking about adjusting is actually the air/fule mixture screw - and it is a good item to adjust - but you also want to adjust the idle screw along with Mil!ion's comments about the choak
again - library - when you own a "hybread" you need to read and expermint a lot.
but do not give up - it will be fun !
