Need a new set of tires/Suggestions?? (2001 Expy-EB 5.4L)
I was doing a little Forest road driving with my son over the weekend, and caught a rock on my right front tire...looks like the cut is too big to repair.
The current tires have been nice, but were new on the truck 35k ago when i bought it. Just about time to replace them anyway...
It was suggested to me that Firestone Destination AT were a well rated tire and a total package install/road hazard/rotation coming out as $580ish.
What is the current concensus for good all around tires for the 2001 Expy...here is what I do with it:
- To work everyday for just couple miles round trip
- Weekends I pull a popup camper to the mountains (live in Colorado springs)
- While camping i will definately take some offroad/dirt road/Forest Road driving excursions
I appreciate any suggestions, or if you know of any sales going on to be aware of...Thanks.
Here are a couple notes I have gleaned from the search feature....
- Are Bridgestone Dueler REVOs still considered one, if not the best? Will they perform well while towing a popup or flat bottom river boat?
- Are the REVOs P structure or LT? I want to ensure without question they are ready for towing.
- I am going to looki into Michelin LTX and CrossTerrains
- I will remember to drop by Sam's to see what they can do for the models listed
- I will make sure the tire i choose is LT or made to that spec for my towing needs.
Thanks again.

I am currently running the following:
Kelly Safari MSR
www.kellytires.com/auto/products/smsrb.html
265/70 17's
They are definetly self cleaning as advertised.
Also near impossible to hydroplane.
Projecting to get about 30 - 35k out of them.
Set of (4) installed runs about $540.00 (+/-).
When mine current kicks get replaced this fall, (4) new ones are going back on. Love 'em!

I ran the Destination LE on my F150,and they were a great tire.Got around 60K miles out of them, and they were still safely driveable when I replaced the wheels and tires(went with 18" Lightning wheels-looks much better now). We use the Destination AT's on out trucks at work, and they're also a great tire-long life, good ride quality, and decent handling for an all-terrain type tire.
Can't go wrong with either one.

I've heard good things about Bridgestone Duelers. I was going to get a set before I decided to switch to biggers wheel/tire combo. One thing to say about the stock Wrangler RT/S rubber, bad. They hydroplaned alot and eventually started flatspotting at only 40k miles and then proceeded to explode, so I would stay away from those.

Yokohamas
Go to tirerack.com, they have users ratings on a lot of tires.
I just purchased Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G051 from them for my 03 Expy which had Continentals. The yoko's were rated 5th out of about 40 tires. Have only had them on for a few miles however, I didn't realize how noisy the Contys were till I put these on. The Expy is quieter than A Lincoln Town Car. They seem to be a much better all around tire. I've towed my new Fleetwood Popup (4600#) with it and the tires have done well in some muddy spots this spring.

Be careful when comparing tire reviews on tirerack. Same model tires in different sizes will have seriously varying reviews. Tire width can make the tread pattern vary a bit which can make certain sizes of the tires noisy while others are rather quiet. Smaller sizes typically have a lower treadwear rating or may wear faster due to more revs/mile. When comparing-look for the same type of vehicle in the review-that'll be the most accurate method for comparison.
Just some food for thought.
