Love the rifle. And gled you posted back because I guess I'm a bit of a number runner myself.

handgun: that is a tossup between the S&W 4506 and the S&W 629 classic hunter

 

Wow, you know the right makes, and models... that's for sure.

But can you hit a man at 1,000 yards with that rifle?

Long range rifle: Winchester High Wall in .40-90 SS (1885) or J. P. Sauer Mauser Sporter in 8x57 (1925).

 

Let's rephrase this post. Post yourhome defense and how far you can hit a man at medium wind.

 

in optimum conditions, i can put a round on paper at distance on the 400 yard range in fort dix.
but as you know, the 25-06 is a very finicky round, and a slight breeze will blow your round way off course

 

Y'all will have to settle for long range rifle. I'm not much of a pistolero.

How about an iron buffalo at say 300-600 or a 1000 yards. Y'all can bring your pop gun '06, and I'll bring out my .40-90 SS. Make sure you set up...up wind.

Paper is worthless at long range without a spotting scope. This is open sight long range target shootin' at a lifesize steel buffalo. Matches monthly throughout the US.


No problemo owning guns here. Assault rifles are banned, a Class 3 license is required to own fully automatic weapons. And there ain't no registration on pre 1898 antiques, cap and ball BP rifles, shotguns or pistols of any age. As a matter of fact, curios and relics rifles and shotguns bought from private citizens by like private citizens (no FFL's between them) purchased at gun shows need not be registered. Easy verification, just call ATF office in Los Angeles, ask for Inspector Esco, or call CA DOJ in Sacramento and ask for Jim.


US Law~Shotgun legal barrel length: 18" / Rifles: 16" / Exception: antique "Trapper" rifles with barrel length of less than 16" must be cleared by ATF, except Marlins, which were all cleared years ago by Colonel Brophy.

 

I oughta ask RexB what the exact laws are for this state.

 

Got an 1892 in the same caliber, with a 30" RTOB and a button magazine. It'll double as a crude fishin' pole, all ya need is some line, bait and a hook.

Why would anyone buy a .40-90 Sharps Straight (3 1/4" cartridge) in 1885? No buffalo left to speak of. Have no klew. I have another High Wall in .40-60 that was shipped to Fort Griffin Texas in 1886. Fort Griffin was the HQ for the southern buffalo hunters once. Why anyone would purchase that cartridge is beyond me, as the .45-70 will do it better.

I have the Browning HP 9mm...Nice and smooth. Not so much ringing as the Glock and Taurus!

1 Old 10 ga octagon barrel. From the late 1800s

 

? Diff model 1892 than my 24" barrel .38-40. Still have some of Grandad's reloaded black powder rounds for it. Only shot a couple of those -- talk about laying down a smokescreen and wanted to save them anyway -- so found some new at a gunshow. Heavy slug for the powder load but not bad down range. Best for the woods.

Does button magazine = side-loading tube magazine like this one?
