truck with no title, what to do?

Im not sure if this is the place to put this but here it goes anyway. Someones giving me an early 80's ford truck. However, it has no title and the current owner does not know any history of where the truck came from. I just want to know how and if I could get a title for this truck. I know someone who has gotten titles from junkyards, but he knows a guy who works there and Im not speaking to him at the moment anyways. But is this possible for an otusider? Could i go to junkyard and buy a title from a truck with the same body style?

In washington, you have the "selling" party fill out this form:

anything newer than 67 will have a vin number and the title should match the numbers on the das/frame ect. if you just buy a title you could get a fined for false tags/plates.most states you can go threw the dmv and get one atots of bs but it can be done.there is away around this that i have done in the past(way long ago) but if i wouldve goten cought id still be in jail

A local junkyard might get you a title but it could cost you between 100 and 200 bones, but being the truck is free it is probly worth it.

Go through your own DMV and apply for the title. Do you want to take the chance that something possibly illegal has gone down involving this truck? Dont be stupid. Dont buy a title from your ol' pal at the junkyard. What does he care?

I once applied for the title to a 1975 Dodge car that was abandoned not far from my home. Found later that the car had been used in a hold-up, and was still owned by 2 banks that had been duped by the 'owner.' Dont go that route.

Most states have a "vehicle abandonment" rule on their books which allow you to sell, junk, dispose, and TITLE a vehicle that's been abandoned on your property. I did this when I lived in NY. I bought a vehicle from a friend who lost the title long time ago, and we simply towed it to my property, then claimed to the local DMV that the vehicle was abandoned for about a year. The DMV traced the VIN to my friend actually, who said the vehicle "died" and he left it there, and sadly forgot about it and didn't want it any longer.

I got a title. The actual process varies from state to state, so you need to visit your local DMV to see how they can help you. More than likely once you get past the person at the counter there is some method for titling a vehicle without a title.

have dmv run the numbers to see if its stolen if not stolen put a storage lein on ,in nebraska we have to run an add in the paper for 30 days with pre owners name & your lein price on it,no reply, you get title in 30 days.
make sure your lein price is high enough no one wants it.

When I said the local junkyard might be able to get it I meant that they are usually a licensed salvage company and can apply through the proper channels to get it done legally.

If the original title has been "junked", don't you have to get a salvage title?

In most states yes DWTOM.

Another option is to find a state that only needs a bill of sale, such as Arkansas (there are a few others as well). Make friends with someone in that state, and mail them a "bill of sale" of your vehicle, and have them register it in their name and get a title. Then mail the title to you with another bill of sale, then you can register it in your state.

If you read this page, it will probably be similar in most states:
http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/salvaged.html

You will want to be VERY CAREFUL you don't commit fraud, http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/fraud.html

Ken

i have had to bond the titlleless vehicle for a small fee in california.

it was essentially a promise that it was not stolen.

it was not very much.

in ohio you just have to fill out a form and pay a small fee.

go to your bmv and they will help you out.

Talking

in PA ya go to the court of common pleas....not the DMV. get an MV-217 and pay 10 bucks. The court will do the whole newspaper notice and all that stuff. takes a few weeks for that and another few to get the title if everything is ok. i did it to get the title to my 69 Olds. old lady that sold it to who i bought it from died and they didnt transfer the title right.....so i got a creampuff car and a nice piece of Toilet Paper
