Please recommend a lid for the bed
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 08:33 PM (EST)]2003 F-150 Supercab Styleside SB. I'd like to put a lid on it. The one that Ford sells, made by Leer, is pretty expensive at $1100-1200.
Snugtop makes a lid, too, but I haven't been to the dealer to price yet. Can anyone suggest other alternatives, please, and ballpark prices?
Thanks much.

I have an A R E on my 02 Supercrew. It covers the black trim on top of the bed, has struts to help open and close it, watertight, and comes painted to match your truck. It's also guaranteed forever. I paid 800. for mine installed. I didn't care for the Leer-looked cheap to me.

Was that a stock item or did you have to order?
I found ARE's website to be a little confusing about applicability of their lids. They show one for the Supercrew, but it isn't clear that they have them for the 6 1/2 foot bed. Any take on that?
If you had to order, how long was the wait?

I found a dealer close to me from their website and called the guy. He had one in stock already painted to match the truck. Drove into San Antonio and 30 minutes later drove out.Too easy. As far as I know all Supercrews have a 6 1/2 ft bed, I don't think there are different sizes.

It has four clamps that holds it on. No holes are drilled into the truck and is removeable but takes two people to do it. Has the struts for easy open and close and locks which was important for me. Covers the black trim on the bedrails. Only drawback is if you have something tall to carry it ain't gonna work. I also looked at the rollback type covers and they rattle really bad. Because I purchased mine soon after the truck, I don't know if it effected the MPG's. I usually get better mileage than most due to driving habits but I get 17-19 in town 20-22 on the road. It's a 4.6., auto, 3.55 gears,Supercrew.

I've been watching trucks with different brand covers and I'm considering the Snugcap. It seems to fit the best and has a clean low profile look. I think you will be happy with any of them though.

To me, a cover has to look good, be weather tight, and cover the plastic bed caps. The only covers I've seen that fit these requirements are the A.R.E, the Snuglid, and ********.
I personally like the thin, flat look, which eliminates the A.R.E.
So, I would choose one of the others, with my personal preference being the Snuglid!
Just my .02.

Thanks, FKNVA.
I'm going with the Snuglid. I looked at an ARE at an accessories shop and, although it looked very nice, I don't want so much hardware. The model I saw had a pretty substantial clamping system that runs along most of the length of the bed rails at top, and it all has to come off when removing. I want something more portable and quick release. In addition, the ARE weighs in excess of 125# I'm told. The Snuglid weighs about 70#.
Thanks again for the info.
