The 300 I6 is a viable engine, Ford just choked the life out of it with restrictive manifolds. Some guys are getting 400 ftlbs o torque out them. Mine runs about 300 ftlbs and I get 15 mpg on the freeway.

I would buy that truck in a heartbeat. I would love to have a 4dor project, I may have kids someday.

 

I have a 1972 crewcab with I6 300 that is a 4x4 and I love it. And if you don't want to buy it I will.

 

They are great roomy trucks. Mine is my daily driver. Ex. Government, and in a color the public could not order. All original '69 paint 'cept the hood and left fender. 390 4 speed (was 360 originally), no p/s, no a/c, no p/b, no radio, as from FoMoCo.

Had to reply to your thread...I just bought by sealed bid a 72 f250 crew cab brush truck. Inside for 30+ years. Sold the pumps to a company in nortern PA. Great truck, 55,000 miles. runs great!!! Currently my daily driver. A definate odd-ball. Everybody who see's it cannot believe condition...and that it is a 4 door. If I could figure how to add a pic..I would. Will post in future. Good luck in finding parts for the rear doors and headliner.I've already had a dealer tell me they did not make a 4 dr in 72....after I showed him my truck...he went back into the vin books to identify it, but could not do anything for parts.

 

That is one good looking ex-government mule. Made me drool.

Gah... that brush fire truck is freakin' awesome. It'd be so cool to see that thing blasting down the road with its lights going.

 

I've got a 72 crewcab which came with 300 and 4 speed combination . It's painted yellow . which I think means it served duty as an electric company truck . It is still reasonably sound and regularly hauls my wife and 4 kids 75 miles to camp along with a tandem axle trailer and frequently a couple tons of firewood or saw logs. I don't really see the need for anything more than an inline 6 . I'll try to post some picks of it in action as it is worked hard and put away wet on a regular basis and keeps coming back for more . I've managed to put together a complete front clip (minus the hood ) floor pans , cab corners and rust free doors to make it my lifetime vehicle . I have a fresh 300 that may go in it , but I'm thinking that it may receive the Isuzu diesel that ran in my 74 F250 for 4 or 5 years to really bring out its' full potential. Nice ride , keep it alive !!

she lives! the truck is enjoying retirement/ rebirth. complete with 95' p pump 6bt and overdrive automatic, disk brake dana 60 front, and many upgrades and improvements. if anyone is interested i will try to post more pics. she will be featured in an upcoming issue of diesel world magazine this winter, engine swap issue!!!

 

that is beautiful and more photos are definitely in order ! I'm still watching for a short box but I think everything else is here to start on my 72 in the spring .

just incase you are having some wheel bearing issues with the original dana60 rear, or plan on heaving hauling with the cummins, any F350 cab/chassis dual wheel rear axle will fit directly in there with only minor mods. personally I'm partial to a Dana 70 rear, the 10.25 sterling axle is a good alternative and are good right up to 1997. gets you to bigger rear brake brakes at the same time.

I have the rear from the 95 dodge 3500 donor truck that gave the drivetrain. But it's a dually rear and I wasn't happy about the idea of seeing the big dually drum assembly sticking out behind a single rear wheel, thats why it isnt in there. does anyone know if I can convert this rear to disk brakes easily, that may tuck behind the wheel, or should I just look for another rear,

 

You can swap the dually rear hubs with singles but it might be easier finding a srw complete axle to swap in. But if you you have a 12v cummins in your truck I'd look into swapping a Dana 80 or a 14 bolt rear axle in it and convert to disc brakes if you didn't go with a factory disc axle. I've seen the Dana 60's blow out just from daily driving with a diesel in them. Definitely upgrade to something bigger love the truck I'm buding a 71 crew right now with a 12v in it is definitely like to see a build thread with lots of pics of your truck.
