Lots of good input from everyone. You may also want to hand calculate your mileage to check the accuracy of your on-board "computer". I've had mixed results with these in some of my vehicles. In some cases I've found them to be drastically off.

Any other tricks of the trade which has you getting that mileage. I was just reading published specs on the '01 Nav which posted 12/17 as their fuel #'s.

I'm considering looking into a '99 Nav vs Expedition just b/c I like what I am hearing about the 4V 5.4.
I'd say 2...maybe 3 mpg is from the tuning.I tweaked the tune for a couple of weeks to get it where it is now,and as soon as I find an electric fan I like-I'm gonna swap that on for the mechanical fan and I look for 2-3 more from that. The 5.4L 4v is MUCH more efficient than the 2V,and has a alot more power through the entire rpm range than the 2V.

Darn it - just when I think I am good looking for an older Expedition, I have to hear things like this:
"The 5.4L 4v is MUCH more efficient than the 2V,and has a alot more power through the entire rpm range than the 2V. "

Which I am a total sucker for...Sounds nice.

That would make this the 2nd time I would get a vehicle after saying I would never buy something like that. 1st time was w/ the Excursion - thought they made it big just for the sake of being big vs the Suburban - not until I realized it was big b/c it was the F250 chassis and how sweat the powerstroke is that I got quickly swayed. I always thought the Navigator was just a primped up Expedition w/ fancy int & body molding - now I like it b/c of the tech/spec side...go figure.

An extra 2-3mpg would make that an impressive ride vs what's on the market even today. Good luck.

There's no luck to it...it's simply good tuning, and loss of unnecessary drag.
My F150 picked up 2-3 mph depending on what I was doing with it from swapping on the electric fan,and that is the result that everybody gets from doing it.

Sounds like you have had good luck with your Navigator's mileage. I can attest to what you're saying about the 4V 5.4s. If my memory serves correctly, they pump out 300 hp vs our 230 ('97-'98) and 260 ('99-'02). I've driven one, unfortunately it blew a hose while I was driving it, but it sure had a lot of giddy up.

Btw, my '98 Expy is lucky to see anything deep in the 9s. Then again, I'm 18 and have a 3" body lift with 285s.

Did you compensate for the tiresize change on the speedo? If you didn't,there's some of your mileage loss.

electric fan

How hard is this modification and why does help so much?

The mechanical fan that's on the truck now has alot of parasitic drag and is causing that drag at any time the engine is running. This equates to extra fuel consumption when it's not even useful for the fan to be spinning at all times. By eliminating this drag by installing an electric fan, you gain fuel economy(typically 2-3 mpg). Installation is fairly simple if you have a basic mechanical skills. There are kits available that are around $400 that come with pretty much everthing needed,or you can custom fab a kit on your own for much less. I have a total of $120 in my fan kit that I installed on my F150, and it yeilded 2.5-3 mpg with no other changes.

Nope, I didn't compensate for the 10% loss but with a few miles to the gallon as most of them get, I'm not too worried about it. With the 10% loss figured in I guess I still am in the 10 mpg range.

Wow,
I have a 97 exp, 5.4, 4x4 with a 4" lift and 315 tires. I run 93 oct, but I get 12-14 mpg (w/OD trans) on varied driving.(Yes recalibrated and checked) I just tuned up and used all syn. oil. I thought that was low, but I guess not...She does not have a great top end, but I could pull a house off a foundation (maybe) and plays well in mud, of course mud miles are quite lower. Just my 2 cents

Sounds like a beast of a car. As a matter of fact, I'm arranging to go mudding soon if my friends will give me a ring back. Do you have any pics of your Expy?

If you want to post them on the FTE website you can go to "User CP" and click on "Edit Gallery." If you want to post them elsewhere with full size, I've had luck with Photobucket.com

I get 12-14 mpg mostly city driving in my 99 and its totally dependant on how I drive it. If I'm very mindful about fuel economy I see right around 14 and I see 12 or so when I just drive it normally. I haven't done much highway driving in mine yet, but the one trip I did take I got about 16-17 mpg.
