Have issues with my 2002 Ford Superduty

I am having trouble with my 2002 Ford Superduty that I could really use some help with. I bought this truck 2 years ago, and I had this problem when I first got it, telling me that I should not have bought it.

In Massachusetts, you need to have the emissions test done every other year, and it is performed throught the OBD2 plug. But if they see any DTC codes in the system it will not go any further. So I had this problem where it took 4-5 trips to the inspection station when I first bought the truck.

This year is my emissions year, and I have been back to the station 15 times this year since December, and it is still not passing.

It is a P1000 code that is present, and usually you have to drive 300 miles before it will clear. Well, I have driven over 3000 miles at this point and it still is not ready. I drive 300-400 miles between trips to the station to be sure to give it enough time, and it still does not work.

Anyone else experience this, and know what I can do to resolve this issue?

Thank you in advance for any help that can be provided.

P1000? I beleave that means you have had a programer or some type of performance chip installed but I am not sure. That code trips with any tuner I think.

Tell us more about your truck...like mods and any tuner or chip you have? We all can help out more if we know a little bit about your situation.

What engine do you have?

Read this:

>8500 lbs, Ford "calibrated out" a few things. QUITE a few, actually.

I just went through this with my 2001 in New York State, so I know how you feel.

First time they did the OBDII thing (last year), it failed. O2 monitor and O2 heater monitor shows "incomplete". Meanwhile, the PCM doesn't even care. Inspector calls DMV, gets an answer the next day, come back in, hook it up, type in the magic model "F250" and it passes.

This year, same thing, even though we used the same magic "model". So, I call DMV, they tell me to tell the inspector to put in "weight code 2" which means > 8500 lbs, and have to do the idle-sniffer test. Passes with flying colors.

Lots of things don't light the check-engine light, and worse, some emissions-related things are calibrated out.

You're probably registered as a "passenger vehicle", so your registration shows the unladen weight, NOT the GROSS weight. The unladen weight is usually the shipping weight on the title.

The inspector looks at the registration, sees 5000-6000 lbs, and wants to do a regular passenger car type inspection.

If you were registered commercially, the registration would show the GROSS weight of 8800 lbs, and not be required to do the OBD-II check. They MIGHT do an idle-sniffer test (like mine did this year).

I suggest you call the DMV (or whatever they call it in your state), tell them this exact thing...

They should be able to do something for you.

Good luck! And let us know how it goes!

Oh, and another side note:

You should be covered under an emissions warranty. So if it doesn't pass, the dealer has to do something about it. They won't be able to fix the "not completed" thing in the PCM, but they should at least (eventually) figure out how to get it passed.

Oh, and WELCOME to FTE!!!!

it is the 5.4. Truck is stock with the exception of the CAI Air Box Mod, and a flowmaster muffler. No programmer or chip ever AFAIK. The problem started before the mods were done. I have been trying this since December to no avail. Thanks for the suggestion Krewat, I am going to try this with our DMV.

Lightning Wolf, the OBD-II vs. OBD-I thing for over 8500 lbs vehicles is almost certainly the problem with your inspection.

This applies to the 5.4 just as much as the V10.
