Heard today from my local Ford parts guy that he heard of Ford doing the Volvo motor for the SD. Not 100% on this, only a rumor at this point

It makes sense Ford would go with Volvo if they decide to build their own. Volvo makes great diesels and Ford owns them.

Articles i've seen say that the new diesels will be Ford designed and built in house in their existing plant in Mexico.

Ford does not own the commercial volvo trucks or construction equipment - as far as I know...

prediction...

I think it's entirely possible that the 2008-2009 6.4 might be the shooting star of the SD line. The 6.7 is an un-proven engine, and is likely to have problems for at least a couple of years... (Especially with new EPA regulations that are bound to come out of Washington.)

I'll go further and say that if the 6.7 isn't completely all that, many owners will wish they had the 6.4 back.

Ford has too much to lose if this new engine flops. I'm sure they looked at theirs and the competitions past failures and successes. I think the engine will be great even if it has a few teething problems. Every new engine has them. Did Ford ever make a diesel for a truck? When Ford still owned it's farm tractor division who designed and built those diesels?

first off the 7.3 nat and 7.3 turbo the same motor just updated and the 7.3 has gone thought a lot of updates and if the 6.0 was good motor not a pos ford would have keep it they went to 6.4 because who would buy a updated 6.0 after all the problems with it and know with the lawsute with ih they are building there own 6.7l for 2010

However, still doesn't answer the question on the basic platform being the same while Ford has changed how many times.

And if we get technical and compare apples to apples, wouldn't it be 5 different diesels (6.9, 7.3 naturally aspirated, 7.3 turbo, 6.0, 6.4) in the same time frame while Dodge has had 2 or 3? Depending on the answer to the above. I may be wrong on that too, there may have been more changes than that in Ford's lineup.

The big diesels are also a v6 instead of a v8 for space saving. A v8 has to have a 90 degree V angle, whereas a v6 is a 60 degree which makes is narrower.

Also, I thought the 6.4 was the same block as the 6.0, just a slightly larger displacement and a lot of top end changes. Is that not true?

Okay, first off, the 7.3 IDI and the 7.3 POWERSTROKE are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOTORS. THE ONLY THING THEY HAVE IN COMMON IS DISPLACEMENT. It irritates me to no end when people get them mixed up. The 6.0, once said and done, was okay, I know plenty of people who are happy with them. No, Ford did not just throw it out because of it's record. Ford threw it out because it wouldn't be able to meet the 07 emissions.

Could he have been talking about the turbo 7.3L IDI?

A little bird told me that this new ford motor is going to be a hit, especially in the power department. I have a really good feeling that little bird is right.
