tuning one is the most impotant. Edelbrocks make good power and mileage

Edelbrock carbs are marketed with performance and economy tunes. Get the economy tune, set it according to directions, and you should be good to go.

Rochester Quadrajet. Properly tuned they can get over 25mpg. My dad tuned a 454 in a suburban to get 17mpg on the road and 14 or so in town. He didn't just tweak the carb though, he put hotter plugs in it, and played with the timing.

The Carter/Edelbrock did fair, the old Holley 4100 does really good (in proper tune), decent Quadrajets do surprisingly well.

Apple to apples, a decently set up 4 barrel will have more power and get better economy then a comparable 2 barrel.

From an economy standpoint though, I still prefer the 4100s.

from running edelbrock, holley, and autolite.....the q-jet was my all aorund favorite...as far as tunability, power, mileage and ability to run at angles

people that call the q-jet a quadrabog just lack the knowledge to tune one to run right

aurgathor is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
I haven't been using carbed cars lately, but as far as I can remember, tuning was very important, and I think I got the best mpg (but not power) with a slightly lean mixture.
