'56 F750 semi carburetor info...please!
Hi guys!
Well...the good news is that I found out that the engine is a 279 according to the info tag. But as I fired 'er up to drive home I noticed gas spewin' atta the carb. So it needs a carb kit. I checked NAPA and O'rielleys but they keep giving me a rebuild kit with the wrong gaskets, i.e. WRONG KIT, dangnabbit!!! The carb is a Carter 0-2258 two barrel, without the heat activated choke. So...if there is any of you geniuses that can help me I'd sure appreciate it! Once again for the record: 1956 Ford F750 semi with a 279ci Engine and a Carter 0-2258 two barrel carb. Free beers at Hooters on me for anyone who can help.

Those sites are definately informative on carbs! Unfortunately I had visited them earlier this evening (been on the 'puter for four plus hours tryin' ta find this carb!) and haven't found it as of yet. It may be listed under Lincoln because from what I have researched, it seems that some Ford heavy trucks used Lincoln 279 engines up till early 60's. Anyhoo.... I'm tired and me eyeballs feel like they're danglin' from chords from staring at this pewter screen! Gonna grab a frosty and hit the sack! Take care, have a great evening and weekend. David

If it isn't raining here in MN tomorrow I'll get some photos and send 'em...promise! You'll get a good chuckle at least! It's been sittin' awhile and the engine, in between the valve covers, was covered with dried leaves. I found a dead mouse around the intake manifold area. Don't care though...I still dig it's oogleeness!! I'm not gonna tell ya what happened the first time I turned 'er over and tried to start it. give ya a clue though. Um...leakin' carburetor...a few remaining dried leaves... "cough, cough"...........

got me stumped
I have been in these big rigs since they were new. Problem is, I know one
learns something every day, but I have not come across a v8 Lincoln
based engine with a Carter on It. Could have been replaced sometime.
Typically it should have a 2bb Holley "teapot" on it. I have several of these,
trucks and I replaced the intake with later style to take a square bowl
4bb Holley. Napa has been good to me with these trucks, however most
counter guys have no clue what a teapot is. When they work, they work,
but kits for these are a tough item. Trust me thats the way to go. Do a
search say 1960 up for a Y block. No insult intended, but If this truck
works for a living like mine > the big Ys gotta go. I only got 2 332 Ys, left the
rest got 391FT truck engine. Theyll slide right in.

My 54 F750 fire truck has a 279 and a 2 bbl holly with a governor.
Like all other fire trucks, i suppose, there is a lot of extra vacume stuff cominig off this carb.. Makes looking for a vacume leak difficult. My acarb is not leaking. but I think the float sticks every now and again and can suck up a lot of gas

Sam, thanks for the info. I am new to this big truck thing so appreciate all input. Why is it that you dislike the Y's? Is it mostly the carburetion issues? I am intending to do an amature restoration on this one...not as detailed as what I'm doing with the '48. I'd be using it to plow my un-maintained road that I live on.... plowin' snow, and leveling gravel in the spring/summer months. So it will be used but not everyday. I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say being that you've driven these since they were new. Nothing like hearing it from the source. thank you in advance. David

There are three vacuum ports that extend out the back of the Carter that I have no idea what their function is. The guy I bought it from said that it ran fine with them left uncapped. When it was running...it ran smoothly. I had to shut it down though when I smelled the gasoline and saw it spewing from the carb. When I took it apart and put in the new kit...both pump check ***** were missing, the float was stuck and the gaskets were trash. I should be able to drive it home this weekend. Thanks for the input.
