8th digit? uh, that was true from 1981, these older VINs have the engine code at the 4th digit....The OP's 302 is a Y block, not the 289/302 type small block.

Here one doesn't have too spend time looking throught those blankety blank 17 digits...the 11 digits are much easier to decipher...example F10DR639XXX. F10 is F100; D is a 352, R is San Jose, the rest is the yr (1965 in this case). The rest of the rating plate is similar to the 1981/ trucks (1980/ cars).

Where's Ed?
