Need some Y-block gu-ru advice

Rock River Wyoming Bout 40 north of laramie , As for the engine for the rest of you guys I won the auction the pics are in my gallery funny the things you cannot do from the desert and the things you can (post pictures) but not text wierd , so as I was sayin it looks like a Y-block to me and hopefully when i get home it will fit into my truck on the original 292 bell housing, the sale said 430 v-8 but the 430's that i have managed to get pictures of have a front distibutor and look more like an FE block , I would be happy if this turns out to be a good runner and larger than my current non functional 292 y block .

430 Mel
I looked up the motor you won on e-bay before closing. Looks like an MEL alright. They are a Y-block on steroids. Blocks are deep skirted giving them a Y appearance. Heads are much different. They are virtually flat with no combustion chamber. Although I have seen pictures of the heads, only heard descriptions of the block deck. Apparently the combustion chamber is formed by the piston and/or deck.
Not much if anything interchanges between the MEL and the 292 variety of Y except the thermostat.
Keep your head down over there, and welcome to FTE!

thanks for the warning on the transmission part will an FE bellhousing for an industrial ford fit the back of this engine ????
Better yet do you know of anyone with a bell housing that will fit both the engine and my five speed tranny ??????
I appreciate the welcome you guys have been great allready for responding so quick and the info here has enlightened me alot as I said before the Y block and now the MEL are two totaly new Items for me to deal with.
Will keep my head down as low as it goes and look forward to getting home to my projects.

That would be way cool it seams that in the militarys infinite wisdom I can quick reply and post pictures to albums but none of the important stuff like start a thread or add text information to describe pictures etc. guess I understand the limitations on ActiveX controls and GOVT Computers I'm lucky enough to have access to this much

Kbart71,
That is a 332 Lincoln Y-block in your truck, not a 292. (check your VIN - fourth digit should be "W") The dead give away is the little "bridge" between the arcs of the rams horn manifolds. They tried the same thing your going to try about 30 years ago on the farm here. Took out the 332 from a T750, and put in an MEL (Edsel 410). Unfortunately, they didn't realize that any Ford 330, 361, or 391 medium truck (500-800) bellhousing would bolt right up to the MEL, so they made their own bellhousing, which never worked right (was always trashing rear seals and clutches). I ultimately pulled out the Edsel, but the truck has never been put back in service. Apparently nobody was ever happy with a 332 in a class 7 or larger truck, just not enough power. That's why Ford came out with the Super Duties, I expect.
Anyway I still have the front mount they made for the 410MEL. You're welcome to it. They did a decent job on that end. You'll need an FT bellhousing (330, 361, 391). The trouble you're going to have is that a 430 crankshaft may not accept a pilot bushing for a std. tranny shaft. They only came in automatic equiped Lincolns and T-birds. The earlier MELs still had the pilot bearings but later ones didn't. The MEL forum mention above could help you.

Am I confused? Are the pictures in your gallery the ebay engine? If so THAT is the 332 (unless its a Lincoln car engine - 317, 341,368 - with truck manifolds). Maybe you 700 DOES have a 292. Fourth digit would then be C or more likely D (Heavy Duty). If that is the case, don't expect great things from the 332 swap. And it won't be a bolt in, either. They use a special bellhousings.

yeah the truck is mine but the engine is the new one hoping it's what he says it is it's an older guy that sold it to me has worked were the engine came from for some time from what dad tells me so i'm hoping it's a 430 with truck manifolds as some of the extra parts that you would not expect to be on a new engineseem to be slightly used in apperance so hoping that includes manifolds carb , cap rotor plugs , etc. I have never known a new engine to come with them , had my dad call and talk to the guy seems to know whats up with the motor and it's current state so hope it's right,
pretty much figured I was going to have a bear of a time swapping but the added power will be worth it if it is what it says it is..

Was looking to get rid of the 292 when i'm finished with the swap however i have to warn you it's upposed to be rebuilt less than 500 miles on it also and it runs like hell,
I have had a hand in that however as i attempted to adjust the valves (had an old friend who is ASE cert run the rack after i did ) but I may have damaged the engine for good, It Idles great but does the popcorn out the carbeurator thing if you try to give it gas under load , new distributor points plugs cap rotor etc. BTW were do you find a set of replacement wires for these as i had to buy a set of custom cut accell v-8 wires and even that kit did not come with enough wire for the engine,.
