Question Big smoke, now nothing!!

OK, my 2001 f150 5.4L has an interesting issue...

A few days ago, I got on the gas just a little bit (seriously, not even close to WOT) and I fogged out the street with a seriously big cloud of white smoke, maybe even a hint of blue to it. I went another 2 blocks to where I was going and shut it down. Now by the time I got there, it was not smoking at all. I started it up again and it smoked a little bit and settled out to nothing. For a few days, I'd see a little smoke on startup, but each time it'd be a little less. Now nothing!! WHAT HAPPENED!!! I did just go to a AMSOIL synthetic blend oil, would that have busted someting loose?? or someone suggested soemthing to do with my Cat. There is no anti-freeze in the oil so that rules out a gasket. Also, ther is not a lack of power. What do you all think, I'm perplexed!!!!!!!

Thanks much!

Perhaps trhe PCV valve stuck open and sucked some oil into the engine?

Depending on your mileage, I'd think the amsoil was slipping past the old seals and into the cylinder probably taking a little crud with it. Once the oil lubes up the seals it should stop, but it may not hurt to add a bottle lucas oil stabilizer.

I had a similar issue when switching from natural to a light synthetic and the lucas cleared it and an oil leak up.

This morning I noticed that it is still smoking a little on startup, Not a lot, but enough to send a cloud across the lawn. I'm going to try the Lucas Stabilizer, but I'm not sure, thinking maybe rings?? What do you all think?? Thanks!

Just a thought but I think I'd go back to the oil I was using before the trouble started.

Sence it's only first thing in the morning, I'd expect the leak to be the valve seals.

I agree. Use Motorcraft 5w20. It's never given me any problems.

Sounds like you may have a coolant leak. Check the level.

AHHG!!! Stop throwing additives at it!

Did this just start happening since you changed over to Amsoil?

Run it for a while, see what happens, and if it's still smoking, change back to whatever you were using before.

Like Jimmy (LxMan1) said, check out the PCV plumbing - it sounds like there might be a lot of oil getting past the PCV valve.

Side note about Lucas oil "stabilizer" - if you change the oil enough, there is no need for this stuff. My brother-in-law put it in both of his vehicles at the same time. Within 2 weeks, they both had a catastrophic oil pressure loss. Coincidence? One was a 351W in an E350, the other was a I6-300 in an E150. The 351W was at 180K miles and never noticed the loss but clacked like heck for a few days. The I6-300 at 90K miles spun a main bearing.

+1 as WHITE smoke is coolant leak (being burned through engine) while BLUE smoke would be oil.
