Basically if you are in love with your motor or it's low miles waste motor oil is bad.
I have a high mileage motor and if it takes a crap, oh well. I also run three fuel filters on the truck, HOWEVER if you get a batch of dirty oil the cost of the filters can eat up you savings quick!

There are many fleets running bio-diesel (refined vegetable oil). My county utility authority runs it in there trucks and equipment.

As far as filtering, all the waste motor oil I run is drained right from the vehicles to my fuel tank or a drum and mixed with diesel. I may sometimes run it through a paint strainer first. My truck has the spin on 6.9 filter which is a finer media for a better filteration than a 7.3 two piece filter. I just changed my filter last week. I cut it apart and found a small amount of sediment in the bottom. The filter does its job and I never had any ill effects. Same injection pump and injectors for over 5 years now running a combo of fuel oil, 100% bio-fuel, diesel/used motor oil mix 3:1.

and I just want my truck not to be hard to start in the mornings, or when ever it is a cold start, it smokes, and miss' after starting, but stops missing after driving it for about a mile.

Whew, I just got done reading all 29 pages of this thread. I have some GP readings to share and I will post them once I get home. This method helped my find my bad injector without even pulling any of them, so I am grateful for this knowledge.

OK, I'll start from the beginning:

I'm not an electronics guy. I used the 2u setting because I am stupid but the values are still accurate, the decimal is just a space or two off.

8.5 BTDC with bad #4 2u setting:

#1 - .88
#2 - .92
#3 - .84-.85
#4 - .67
#5 - .99
#6 - .94
#7 - .90
#8 - .90-.91

Replaced new #4 with old injector. I noticed my #2 line was leaking at the pump during testing. 2u setting.

#1 - .86
#2 - .97
#3 - .86
#4 - .78
#5 - .90
#6 - .95
#7 - .87-.88
#8 - .91

Replaced #4 with old injector @ 11.7 BTDC 2u setting:

#1 - .86
#2 - 1.02-1.03
#3 - .84
#4 - .79
#5 - .96
#6 - .97
#7 - .91
#8 - .91-.92

@ 10 BTDC 2u:

#1 - .84
#2 - 1.02-1.03
#3 - .81-.82
#4 - .75
#5 - .90
#6 - .95
#7 - .85
#8 - .91

@ 9.0 BTDC 2u:

#1 - .85-.86
#2 - .97
#3 - .82-.83
#4 - .72
#5 - .90
#6 - .92
#7 - .84-.85
#8 - .88

I have three more sets of values but I am not sure of the timing. I tossed the meter because at 8.5 BTDC it sounded retarded. I advanced it to where I thought it sounded right. I want to say 10.6 BTDC but I am going back a few weeks. I got the 21.83 MPG on my "custom" timing, though. Here are the readings I recorded at the time. 2u setting.

#1 - .90
#2 - 1.05
#3 - .91
#4 - .76
#5 - .97
#6 - 1.0
#7 - .97
#8 - .96-.97

I should be getting my new replacement #4 tomorrow and I will install it when I get home from work and take more readings.

2u | 2m settings #1-#8

.90 | .51
1.03 | .57
.86 | .48
.78 | .44
.96 | .53
.94 | .53
.99 | .55-.56
.90 | .50-.51

What does a millivolt sign look like on a multi-meter? Yeah, I'm dumb, I know. I wish I could find the manual for the thing!

I am currently on my custom timing which I (think) is 10.6 BTDC but I can't remember measuring it. I get white smoke on start up and it gets worse the colder it is. The coldest I have started it was 65F and it smoked and shuddered like hell. My fuel is turned down maybe a flat or a flat and a half from factory. I have trouble starting the truck when hot. I have to crank 3-15 seconds some times. Then, some times it fires right off. Anything under operating temp produces a puff of white smoke when started. When started, it smells rich. It sounds like retarded timing but according to my meter, I am well advanced from 8.5 BTDC. It doesn't sound too advanced. I will have to make a video once I install the new injector tomorrow.

Thanks!

Edit: I also have 1/5 peddle or less of power. If I go any further than that, it just lugs a little and will eventually down shift. It is the most gutless vehicle I have ever driven. Semi trucks can out run me on the highway. I would turn the fuel up if it didn't smell so rich.

Periferal Wiring

I'm also having a problem with starting. I have a new controller and factory wire set on the GP's. The fuseable links that are along the passenger side wheel well were getting so hot that they had melted the insulation off of the wire. I replaced them will Fuse Links from NAPA and now the truck won't start at all.

It's like they are not creating enough resistance, but the old ones created so much resistance that they looked like a fire hazard.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Ron,

You might have better luck starting a new thread. It sounds like you have a completely separate set of issues going on.

Here are my GP readings after the new injector was installed:

#1 - .93
#2 - 1.06
#3 - .89
#4 - .93-.94
#5 - .86
#6 - 1.01
#7 - 1.0
#8 - .92

The truck runs smoothly now. I don't get any shaking at idle or in gear. I am very happy with these results. I can't wait to install a turbo and turn up the fuel. I should have good performance after that.

It is very rewarding. I had a smile on my face all night last night. Now I just have to work out my starting issue. I think it is slow starter speed, fuel turned down too low, leak back or a combination of the three. I have to crank a while in the morning and I get white smoke for about 10 seconds and it is only 70F out. The GPs are new, too.

I just found this thread and have read through it. I would like to learn more but it looks as if the interest here has died. Does anybody know what has happened to Crossbones, is he still here or has he moved to some other forum? His idea of getting others to participate was a good way of getting everybody to see how all this works. If anyone else has any more information about this please post.

I think crossbones got fed up with all the BS people were giving him and went somewhere else or picked up a new project. This thread helped me pinpoint a bad injector and fix a rough idle and poor MPG on my truck, so it is worth at least that. I read the whole thread and have been suggesting methods from it to new members and old members. Some think it is valid and some don't understand.

Skip,

You either have several bad glow plugs or several bad injectors. You shouldn't be getting a reading of 0. It should also be tested in millivolts.
