Need to know correct engine color(s) for a 1958 272
Hi folks! I'm rebuilding the 272 engine in my neighbor's 1958 200 series pickup. Now, I'm a Ford guy but this truck is a bit older than I'm used to. I don't know what color(s) is correct for the engine. This is not a concours correct type of thing, I'd just like to be close to right. When I tore it down I found traces of red, gold, black, and yellow(!!!???) Hope I can get a few pointers from you folks, thanks for any help!!!

Thanks for helping out, My58Ford. I gotta tell ya, I have been getting some RADICALLY different answers about this, depending on where and who I ask. I have been told the engine should be black, except for the valve covers (red or gold); I have also been told it should be red, period.
The strange part is I have found traces of ALL of the above colors on this motor!!! ARRGGGHHHH!
But, considering your forum "handle", I'm going lean heavily toward taking your advice. Do you have any idea where all the "other' color suggestions are coming from? Are those other colors right for newer or older models, or different engines?
Thanks again for your help!

50 years later who knows what engine or parts have been installed so the probability of multiple colors is there. I have a 58 engine that I pulled out of a one owner 32,000 mile truck. It is YELLOW with argent silver valve covers and everything else (starter, gen oil cap etc) are all black.
I tend not to answer these type of threads as someone will come along and say I'm wrong. Just the facts here.

Thanks for jumping in bigwin, I need all the input I can get.
So far, of the people and businesses I've asked, I have two votes for yellow, two for red, and one for black with red (or gold) valve covers.
I looked closely at some of the smaller parts I took off the engine before it went in to be tanked, and there is yellow paint under the red paint........
I might just jump off a cliff before this is over!!!!!

I have to agree with bigwin, yellow with silver valve covers & everything else in black sounds right for 57 & early 58.
I saw an all original 57 that had never been touched a few years ago and the original engine paint was yellow, but I just can't remember the valve cover color! (my bad!).
Also as stated, after 50 odd years who knows how many times your engine has been removed and had something done to it and repainted by several different owners, each one probably painting it whaterver color they liked at the time!
As far as the "other" colors, I'm sure Ford painted different engine colors for different years & models, but I could'nt tell you what color for what year after mid 58 for the F100.
A friend of mine had a 57 Ford Ranch Wagon with a 312 in it that was painted red from the factory.

O.K., unless the truck's owner hates the idea of a yellow motor, that's what it's gonna be. Now, just to pick nits, is the yellow I need a "bright" yellow, or a more subdued color. I looked at the engine paint catalog in my local parts store, and have the option of bright yellow, or a duller, more orange shade of yellow.
What do you think????

They used a Semi-Gloss paint on the engine block, Marigold on the Y-blocks, I'm having to go from memory as to the correct name as my reference books are still packed away, Vermilion on the I-6 & Gloss paint for all the rest of the parts attached to the engine.

Hi Col, I checked out your link, and the yellow you used is the same as the brighter of the two colors I can get at my parts store. I never would have guessed that I'd LIKE a yellow Ford engine, but yours looks great!!
I really do apprecate the great input I've been getting here, it has been a huge help in this project.
