Question for California X owners
Hi Californian Ex owners,
Long story short, I've moved back to California after
a short stay in Virginia. While in VA I bought a new Ex.
I was in DMV line for a new CA DL, my wife was handling
the Ex.
She was told since the Ex weighs so much it has to be
registered as a commercial vehicle.
We paid a lot more for the licence, but it didn't say TRUCK
or COMM on it, in fact it looks a lot like a regular plate.
The purchase was over 1 year ago, its a diesel, more than
7500 miles. So none of those provisions should have applied.
Do you have your Ex registered commercial even though you
don't use it commercially?
Did I get ripped off?
thanks

I might look into that if I were you. Question the DMV regarding this issue. I own two SD's, and an EX (V10), none of them required commercial registration, and I have never had an issue with the DMV. I just pay, and never questioned it myself, however, my F-650, and International DT are both registered as commercial, and the insurance is out of this world.

You got ripped off. I have a 2000 X and a 2000 F250. All open bed vehicles are considered commercial in California. The registration on my F250 was around $380 and the X only $160. The differnece in the two was weight fees and commercial plates. You got screwed.
Just another reason Im happy to be out of California.
When I moved to California at 19y/o I had to take out a loan to register my truck. I had to pay the regular registration fees and then they charged me a Smog impact fee of $500 for bringing a vehicle from out of state. That was later over turned in a class action law suit and the $500 was refunded to everyone that was charged the fee.
