ok well i have no idea on how ppl deal with them

so today i called two of the main ones in town and asked for parts and got what seemed like a 10 yr old at both of the places

so i ask how much for 4:30 gears frond and back installed so they ask like 20 questions finally got to the price and i almost dropped the phone over $1000 for each front and back i asked like three times to make sure it was just for gears and not the whole axle and nope over 2 grand for gears come on thats a joke so i have a buddy doing them for about 800 total and hes prob better then ford techs anyway

so ya is 800 a good deal and maybe some sites i could order them from or look at just to make sure

Even $1000 is cheap, most shops will charge around $1500 to do the front and rear so it seems about right that the dealer would charge $2000.

If you tow heavy trailers then you will see a huge benefit in going with lower gears (the truck will tow much easier). And you will have better acceleration with lower gears as well.

If you don't tow much and are satisfied with your performance now then it probably won't be worth it to spend the money on changing gears.

Dang dude. You're 17 years old. You have a long life ahead of you. Try and remember some of that punctuation they taught you in school. It'll sure make your life easier (for us, if not for you).

Okay, done with that. I think what the dealer quoted was probably about right for a dealer. I hope you're buddy is as good or better than a dealer. And I hope he comes with a warranty also. Anyway, if you can get it done for $800, that's the way for sure. You probably won't find a better deal than that. Good luck.

 

$800 is a good deal, that's what good friends are for.

I know where conman3300 is coming from, my best friend Chris lifted my truck for free; wouldn't take money from me either. He was more excited about my lift than I was.

It's a two-way street though, if I knew how to do something Chris didn't, I helped him out and saved him the time and/or money, and vice versa. We accomplished alot of projects that way while building an awesome friendship and meeting alot of cool people.

 

Yeah, but the Ford dealer will at least give you a warranty on the parts AND labor for 12 months. Ford parts, installed by Ford dealer, equals 12 month warranty on everything.

And, Ford will probably replace all the bearings at the same time, instead of reusing what was there.

$2000 +/- for front and rear is not at all outrageous.

I'd be very suspicious of the $800 quote. I don't even think you can buy the parts for $800.

 

Quality ring and pinion front and rear with master install kits will put you in the $800+ range in parts.

 

I'm beginning to see the light - $800 is LABOR ONLY. Notice he needs to get the parts yet.

So, $800 + $800 in parts (or more) - $1600.

And Toreador, I'm no gear-virgin either, and I wouldn't warranty it

 

I think Toreador is the friend doing the work and conman is his friend Chris. Does conman3300 know how to install 6" Procomp lifts?

if its 1600$ from ur buddy or 2000$ form Ford i'd use Ford.

unless ur buddy has setup ALOT of diferentials..theres no such thing as "close enuf" when settting gearlash/ spacing...

having gear work is one of those things u want someone with serious "handson" time to do, just like a engine or tranny rebuild... sure alot of vehicle service can be done with ur buddies and beer, but somethings are better left to people who do it day in day out..

least thats my take on it...
