Well,I may get beat down like a yard dog,but I'll chime in on this one.I think the 6 speed is a gimick,I have a 5 speed Dodge company truck and the rpm appears to be the same as 6th in the Ford,a tad bit under 2k at 70 mph.I think the 6 speed is just one up-ing the others with 5 speeds, after all, there is only so much overdrive that a 300 bhp motor can pull! On the other side of the coin,I have a 72 F250 camper special with 318,000 miles and the original c-6,keeping up with the service is of utmost importance in making anything last. I have not driven the new 6 speed Ford tranny,so I cannot totaly discredit the idea that its better, but I am very happy with the 4 speed in my 2000 F150. In my humble opinion,if it aint broke, dont fix it. I can, however, state with utmost confidence, that the more complicated things get,the easier they are to break, and the more they will cost to get fixed.
This is just my opinion,I hope ya'll dont crucify me for it.

slinks away with head down........

The whole point of six gears is to reduce the rpm drop . If you pay attention to when and how the 5 speed shifts it has a substantial drop in rpm between gears. This is one of the reasons our trucks get bad mileage. When the transmission shifts and the rpms drop 1000 rpm the engine has to work harder to make it back up. If it only drops 500 rpms between shifts less fuel is used.

yea but the old fords had a hp torque curve that climbed fairly evenly up the rpms. New ones just jump up at a certain rpm. rest of the rpms are squat. Mabe just a 4 speed, and a 2 speed rear axle so you have better luck launching the thing.

tranny speeds

I tow a travel trailer and had a 4spd tranny before and that motor had to do a lot of compensation to overcome those ratios, it was obvious!. Now I have a 5spd with my v-10, 2005. It is way superior to my previous 4spd. There is still a noticable gap between 4th and 5th gear. A 6 gear would be perfect and you wouldn't need as much torque to do the same work. With the quick responsive computers that vehicles have now it only makes sense. Ford needs 6speeds in there half tons. They already have the best truck otherwise.

6 spd will probably equate to more weight! I know, trucks aren't dragsters!!
