Odometer Tampering?

I purchased a 2000 limited explorer with approx. 89000 miles.
I drove it 33 miles and the odometer and trip mileage counter stopped working.
It seems very suspect.
Is this a problem with this year explorer?
Any suggestions?

I haven't heard this problem at all. This is the old-fashioned odometer, not the new digital ones, right?

My 1995 Explorer (old style odometer, not electronic) just stopped at 93,000. I am searching here to try to find where to start on a fix. I know it hasn't been tampered with, I bought it new in 1995.
