2006 F-150 5.4 3V Engine Detonation/Pre-Ignition...I've Had it!!!
#76
I went to a second dealer on Friday and gave the service advisor a summary, including that the first dealer said I should use higher octane fuel. The service advisor told me that is ridiculous (my thoughts exactly) and doing that is only covering up a problem. I left the truck at his dealer that day and got the dreaded call that afternoon saying that they could not duplicate the ping. I picked the truck up about 30 minutes before they closed and about 5 minutes after driving off the lot, the ping returned. It is now Monday and the ping is worse than ever and only getting worse. I am going to take off work a lunch tomorrow and bring it back to the dealer and take them for a ride in the truck to show them exactly what I am talking about.

I have been following this post for a while now as I have had the same problem with my 5.4 F250. I had the truck to a couple of dealers many times as they always said its normal, or dont hear any pinging etc... basically I constantly got the runaround. It did not matter what fuel brand or grade, I even paid for custom tuning and it did not help at all. I finally found a dealer that was willing to do what real mechanics do and actually get their hands dirty and try to find the problem and fix it. They did not hear it ping as well, but pulled the 1 spark plug and it seemed to have some carbon on it. They pulled 2 and the porcelean was seperated from the body of the plug. In the end there were a few that were broken in the head, some all carboned up so basically they were all bad in one way or another. They truck only has 20,000 miles on it. They put an upgraded plug in, I believe a colder range, and its like a whole different truck. No pinging, the truck actually has power and now I dont have to go buy something else. It is too bad that I had to fight a whole year to get this problem resolved. Not sure if its your problem but it might be worth a try, keep in mind that its common for these plugs to break in the head when removing.

In my case, it sounds just like a very common description of pinging - "like there are nails in the engine". That's with the windows up. With the windows down, and driving alongside walls or anything which reflects the sound back to me, I hear a rattling sound which I am sure is the pinging.

OK -I am a complete rookie here but I have had my hand in a bunch of new engines
What causes ping?
Pre-detonation from;
Improper octane to compression ratio
Improper fuel/ air mix due to airflow sensor, air temp sensor, altitude sensor, exhaust 02 sensor
Improper fuel delivery from injectors
A guy I met took me for a ride in a really nice subaru with a tuner that showed the "ping" on each cylinder and he could adjust each injectors flow to eliminate the ping... I was into tuning street bikes at the time and didn't take note of the name brand of the tuner
