check engine light, bad idle after cold start, surging
I recently changed the spark plugs just b/c it was time to do so. The old ones actually looked good, so I was happy about that. Well, then the engine starts running rough in idle after a cold start and if I stop it will surge some and rock back and forth a little. After it gets warm, it's fine.
So I took it to Firestone(i wish I could find a good mechanic)thinking they could test the spark plugs to see if one was bad or the gaps were wrong. They said it was the EGR valve. The guy showed me that he could put a propane tube into one of the holes on the underside and it made the engine run smoother. He said it shouldn't affect it if the EGR valve was working. They wanted $250 to do it so I decided to save $150 and spend 20 minutes replacing it.
So I replaced the EGR valve exactly like I saw the guy at the shop put it back on. The bolts to the engine, one from the exhaust, and the sensor bolts.
After replacing it runs just as bad(maybe worse), the check engine light is on, and blinkers don't work(although this is probably b/c of the check engine light b/c the hazzards work fine).
The only thing I can think of is maybe I messed up the sensor that goes in the top of the EGR valve, but I don't know.
Any help?

Pull the codes. My vote would be O2 sensor or TPS.
Not sure on the turn signals. The Check Engine light would not cause this. The hazards are on a separate flasher so that makes sense. Probably just a fuse.
Otherwise your EVP could be screwed as you suspect.

Is there a way to clear the codes without a "code puller"? I tried disconnecting the battery hoping that would work and it didn't.
Oh, and the fuse is fine. It may just be the turn signal flasher on the fuse panel. The turn signals have been erratic lately anyway.
