2-3 shift extremly high

Hello everyone,

My '96 4.0L Aerostar is shifting into 3rd at about 55 mph. It's intermittent, but more frequent when cold. All other shifts are normal.

Does this trans have a mechanical governor like the old A4LD'S? (I hope so because I'll change it out).

Fluid level good, but will be changed soon. No leaks. TPS is new.

Thanks in advance

hi joe,
all shifts in the 4R55E are electronically controlled by the PCM feeding a signal to the pertinent shift solenoid

is this an intermittent upshift point or an intermittent unexpected downshift?

how old is ATF and what color and odor...if dark and burned or strong odor change now....failed burned ATF will affect the EPC solenoid values and internal shift pressures

pull the codes...many tranny codes on the post 95 EEC-V systems
best to use a scanner, will give you complete read out on solenoids, pressures, etc.

failing IAT or ECT sensor will prevent shifts into OD 4th and/or torque converter lock up
