1997 Ford Explorer 4 wheel drive XLT - Transmission

Hi all. Left at 2:00 am this morning from Baltimore and drove fifteen hours to Florida. About three quarters of the way here, either my transmission or my transfer case started acting up. While cruising at 75 or 80, I have no problem. However, whenever I let off of the gas, or brake, I get a high pitched whineing sound coming from the area of the engine transmission connection.

If I lightly step on the gas, the whineing would stop again. It seems as if something was still "spinning" the same speed as it was before I applied the brakes and was not either disengaging or reducing its spin speed with the reduction in the engine speed.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Being out of town is certainly a handicap. If this is a known problem, an appropriate amount for repair or guideline would be appreciated also. Thanks.

Cordially,
Bob Blatchley
