If anyone knows what is going on, I have no problem with posting help in this thread.

P.S.: One thought is that there are now limits on gallery size and maybe we are over the limit. I do not get an error message -- just small "?" icons.
I finally uploaded pictures into 7231-2.
Used Microsoft Picture Manager in Office to re-size the pictures.
Will have to go back and add captions.

Well thanks for the warning.. I had always heard good things about the 5531 and 5831 in light truck applications anyway. Also had heard you can get seals and wear sleeves and such pretty easily. The 7000 series sounds like it may be a bit more desirable but arent they much bigger and heavier? We're already pushing our luck with the 5531 or 5831 in an F250.

Had no problem with seals with my 7231.
Took the old seal to establish the seal style along with i.d. and o.d. measurements.
I didn't go to an auto parts store but to a place that sold big truck parts.
I've never had a 5000 series but have read and heard from truck transmission guys that the 5000 series are not a first choice due to lack of parts and their lack of strength.
Don't know size and weight of the 5000 series but, 5000 oil capacity is 4 pints.
The 6000 and 7000 series is 8 pints and the 8000 series is 12 pints. You can see from the pictures in my album 7231-2 that the 7000 series is not a bad fit in an F series.
A bit challenging but not a bad fit. I was looking for a 5000 series until I starting discussing it with truck transmission people and then relaized a 7000 would be a harder installation but would generate less maintenance headaches. Check out my album 7231-1 for 7231-A/B/C/D ratios, specs and my installation notes. Also, I easily located a 7231 that had the ratios I wanted, 7231-B, 1.24/1.00/.86

Yeah that was very nicely done, neat install. Do you recall how long and heavy your 7231 is? It seems to fit nicely where you put it.

230 lbs and 23 inches? Oh wow! I've still heard more good than bad on the 5831. We have a member over at another web site that just installed one and is thrilled with it. He threw in all new seals and wear sleeves, used anaerobic gasket maker to replace the NLA gaskets and just generally cleaned the box up real good. I really don't want something bigger than a 5000 series box that's already heavier than my main box. So how about it F6 guy? Do you still have your 5831? What version is it and might you still part with it?

Well the tag is missing but I believe it to be the straight up 5831 as it has a 2:1 under 1:1 and .64:1 over drive. If you are intrested PM me and we will go from there.

Like to see pictures of the finished installation.
My origional cross-members had to be modified as I didn't leave enough room for driveline symmetry adjustment.
Had vibration issues until I spent the time to get it right.
That 5831 .64 overdrive sounds good.

What are the pros and cons of using shift cables versus shift linkages on one of these brownie boxes? Which is easier to set up correctly? Which is cheaper? What's more likely to fold without warning when I'm a long way from home.... etc Thanks guys.

Finally did it!

Rebuilt my 5531 Spicer and installed it last week. So far so good? 5th gear with brownie in OD runs 1450 at 70 MPH. In 4th with Brownie in OD it is better than with out Brownie and using 5th gear previously. No lack of power in double overdrive especially at 75 mph.
I don`t know how the MPG`s will figure. Planning on a 6000 mile trip next week, so I guess I`ll find out.
Truck is 95 F350 SC ,SRW, 5 speed and 3.55 gears, lightly modified with 218,000 on the clock.
WISH ME LUCK

That's great to hear. Is this behind a 7.3 IDI or a gas motor? Obviously behind a ZF5 either way. Where'd you hang it and what did you use for a shifter/shift linkages?

Actually if you use the correct cable snd a decent shifter there is no downside. The upside is the ease of hookup not using rigid linkage
Some crane carriers used cable linkage on the aux trans
