Water Sensor

I had the water in fuel sensor go off for the first time, drained the seperator(quite a bit of water before fuel started to come out), drove for about 7/10 nths of a mile and the water in fuel msg came back up, tried to drain again and fuel came out immediately. Now there was quite a bit of water the first time, the sensor might have been submerged, would that render the sensor bad? Or is it oversensitive to the presence of water that it goes off easily? This is the first time I have had this happen to me on the truck and it's easier to see the fuel/water seperator on the tractor, so you can tell if you got all the water out or not on the tractor.

If it was submerged you might want to go ahead and change the fuel filters also. Did you follow the purging procedures and all also? I've never had mine come back on that quick.

I had believed that I did, I was just kinda shocked to see that msg come back on when I had just drained the seperator. I didn't notice anything else coming out in the fuel(sediment or etc., I get paranoid since water happened to be in the fuel chances were good for something else to get in there as well).

Boy was this a mess. I had gotten a kit from the dealership. All that gel and "stuff" I had replaced the plate and the sensor. Somewhere along the line I had definately gotten a bad batch of fuel. I think I did it right though, no warning message and no other lights coming on after my fix it job. Thanks for the help, I really do appreciate it.

They said it wasn't covered under warranty, I figured it was because I was over the 36k part of the warranty, I didn't think it would have fallen under the 100k warranty.

I had the same problem with my '03' 6.0 PSD Excursion. Water-in-fuel light. Then to make matters worse, the drain plug, being brass, stripped-out where the Allen wrench went into it. Purchased a new plug from the dealer, (steel not brass), and had to remove the fuel line manifold from the fuel filter/water seperator assembly just to get the old drain plug out. Did have some, what appeared to be water in it. After this the light came back on the next day.(@ 30 minutes of running). Following day, the light came on for @ 5 minutes, then went out, and has not came on again. Inside the fuel line manifold was pretty dirty!! (139.000 miles) I cleaned it up as good as I could, careful not to damage the sensor in any way. So far, So good!! There is a TSB here at FTE that will help you. https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/full...php?tsb=06-6-5 Hope this helps !!

Hey BowTieHatr, do you know how much water it takes to turn on the WIF light? The first time I drained mine, it had approx. 1/2 liter of water. I felt this was a huge amount of water for the WIF not to have illumintated. I drain mine every oil change, but am wondering if my sensor doesn't work.
Thanks
