Just found this site been reading this thread and believe I have bad gasket in the valve body.

Here are my problems

OD wont engage and send the od light blinking ( not in a code form just a steady blink )

starting at a stop and holding the gas pedal to the floor it will bounce off the rev limiter then shift after a second or two which will send the od light into blinking mode again with no code pattern

while light is blinking it shifts more firmer than normal

my fluid is at proper level and does not smell burnt

put it into 1st gear to check compression braking and it acting like you just stuck in neutral

tried to pull codes out with a scanner from the part store but no luck

History on the trans
I had it rebuilt a couple of years ago due to OD gear set exploding and knocking out 2nd gear shift solenoid ended up having the drums, bands, and torque converter replaced

Does this sound like it is a blown gasket on the Valve Body?

Which transmission?

I looked at the certification label on the door of my 04 Explorer under the TR was the letter V which is not even listed in the owners manual as a possible trans. for that year. So im a little confused. I guess i hope it doesnt have a Ford tranny after reading this. lol any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Ford Ranger

I sorry to hear about your problems with the tranny, But I wouldn't write off all of them.
I own a small construction business. The company has owned an 89, 90, 96, 97 and 03 Rangers and a 94 and 96 explorers. ALL of them were abused (overloaded, under maintained, driven by people who don't own them). Out of all of these trucks only one (90) tranny was rebuilt at 160K and one (96) broke the OD band at 280K. All of them had over 200K when sold none had any engine issues.
Sorry about your luck.

I have read the entire post and still cannot find the answer to my issue. I have a 1998 explorer sport with the 5R55e. My only problem that I have is that when Im in 2nd gear I have to let off the gas for it to shift into 3rd at any RPM. I have replaced the number 2 shift solenoid and still does the same thing. please if you have any ideas it would be appreciated as I am going to sell it and do not want to bring the price down 1500 for a new tranny.

Thanks

The only thing I can suggest is to make sure it is the transmission!!!! I had the same problems (bucking and jerking not shifting properly) after I replaced $1200 valve body!!! So make sure it is trans. If OD light blinking definately trans. Maybe my problems sound familiar to someone else if so please help if you can.
I think it all started with overheating in which I had to replace the thermostat. Then the bucking started. I took it to the trans shop who said I needed a new valve body. 6 months later same bucking and jerking. It was time for service and new plugs so there we found oil coming up through 3rd spark plug. Changed the valve pan gasket truck runs fine. 6 months later same 3rd spark plug leaking again. Changed it again, then it starts running as if it had bad gas. checked it and found bad ignition coil pack. That has been changed and now 3 months later my problems are starting all over again!!! I now hear the radiator fluid gurgling, when I turn off the truck, as if it's going to overheat any minute!!!! This truck is driving me nuts and costing a pretty penny!!! I bought this truck Jan 05, I love it but I don't know what to do with it!!!!
Sorry, I hope this helped if not maybe you can help me?

More likely what you are experiencing is the "5R55E 2-3 Flare" which is also a symptom of a bad valve body and/or a bad EPC solenoid.

It sounds like the forward clutch has welded itself together and cant release, it will have to be rebuilt.

i have a 95 mazda b4000 with the 4r55e auto tranny. about 2 months ago i broke the intermediate band and one of the anchor struts. replaced those two items and the seals. since then i have not been able to pull up hill into my driveway and park overnight because in the morning it won't go into gear and i have to sit in the street for about 5-10 minutes before it will go and it stuggles to do that. any thoughts?

5r55E shift problems

I have a 5r55E transmission in a 99 ranger. The transmission winds out in 1st gear to about 25-30 mph before shifting. When placed on hand held scanner, the transmission thinks it is in a different gear and believes it has shifted when in fact it has not. Sometimes it calls for a shift that does not happen and other times it just gets the gear wrong. (Like believeing that it is starting out in 3rd,)
I am going to change the ss2 but I am not sure exactly which selenoid that is. Can someone help with that.
I also got a engine error code about the MAF sensor being bad, I know that can effect the transmission, but the code has since gone away but the transmission problem remains.
Anyone got any clues? Thanks
