Exclamation no reverse need help

I have a 1997 ranger with 52,000 on it. This truck runs great no problems engine is strong for a four banger uses about half quart every 3000 miles. my question is I was going to the store and parked the truck ran great all gears shifted great no problem.
when I came out of store no reverse cant figure this out fluid level is perfect and looks clean and red. Is this a common problem that goes on with this model if so could somebody give me some input where to start. Oh and the truck still riuns great and shifts perfect in all forward gears.

did you say this is a stick? or automatic trannie? if automatic i might look into the "input shaft nut." and that's as much as I know.

try looking it up on Transtar Industries, Inc. - One Name. One Click. One Call. I found a complete internal workings of basicly every trannie known to man. catalogs, part numbers and so forth.

hey guys. did this service last night on my 96 3.0L ranger. bad news is. the truck won't start. i ran it through gears and 1st seems gone. tried drive, and it almost shut off the truck after some shaking. shut off the truck with the key. started it. put it in reverse and it almost wanted to go forward, then didn't move. any thoughts to start your morning everyone?

and of course it had to be raining the first day without my girl(truck). two feet and a heart beat is what i keep hearing. :-(

PLEASE HELP

I've got a 97 explorer that I thought had the valve body problem, did the gasket replacement this week but still have problems. It actually shifts fine in all gears but when coasting down hill engine goes right to idle and I can hear a rattle. Like nuts in a can. Goes away as soon as I give open the throttle. The real problem is after closing the throttle and coasting when I open the throttle it clunks into gear. This only happens when its in third gear going 40mph+. Sometimes it will also make a racheting sound or hard clicking sound definitely coming from transmission but only when applying throttle after being at idle, again 40mph+. Again, not flairs or hard shifts as long as I stay on the throttle. All I can think of is that it's losing pressure when at idle and builds pressure when throttle is applied and slam back into third. No problems in first or second gear. Any ideas.

New here
I have a 1995 Ranger with over 200,000 on it. 4.0 engine 4x4 and the 4r55e transmission as I understand. Several months ago my overdrive light would start flashing after driving about 40 miles then it would quit shifting into overdrive and the light would stay on. Now the light does not come on and it does not shift into overdrive at all. Would this also be the gasket trouble or something else. I had it checked and it does not show any codes.

Hate to bump this thread after it being dead for a month, but I need some input.

I had my 4r55e rebuilt (96 Explorer) about 40k ago. It was fine until about a week ago, when I came to a light and took off, and it would not shift into second. The O/D light started flashing, so i let off the gas and it caught 3rd. I have first, third and fourth. (reverse works fine as well)...

Could this be the same gasket issue? Or possibly the intermediate servo (It happened once before, which is why i ask...)

I have a2004 2.3 Ranger with the 5r44e and the 2-3 flare problem. It only has 37K on it and I am disappointed. This truck sat for a long period of time with body damage before I could fix it. No o/d codes or check engine lights. Any ideas? It is fine when cold. It does fine when under hard throttle.

Sorry, It's been a while, think I finally found my problem seems it wasn't the trans??? so maybe the new valve body worked cause I don't have clunking anymore!!! But I was still having problems and it felt like the trans. I did a full service and replaced my plat. spark plugs of 30K miles found an oil leak at 3rd spark plug. Ford dealer said I would have to buy engine block just for the seals under the valve pan cover, right!!!! Just found the seals $37 and the truck is running fine for now.........

Hello everyone, and thanks much to everyone who posted up their problems and especially Fordboy for the fix guide.

I have a 2002 XLT 3.0 with a delay when shifting into "D". I also notice a hard shift from 1st to 2nd and an occasional hard shift from 2nd to 3rd. I have yet to try the engine braking test and I am going to go do it now.

Update: Tests completed. In "D", engine breaking on 1st gear is virtually nonexistent. (On a somewhat related note, when I am on a incline and starting off, I notice that even though it is in Drive, it still rolls backwards much like a manual transmission. Related?)

In "1", engine breaking is present but it could be stronger.

My father also has the same truck as I do with the exception being a true 4 door cab and the longer bed. His transmission does not have the problems. I am going to test on his tomorrow.
